Meeting people in the real world is the best method of getting to know and actually finding interesting people, but since were talking about chat...
One thing for sure, if within the first five seconds the guy your talking to uses "ROFLMAO" I'm afraid you have landed another boy who lacks vocabulary, so much that the chances of a stimulating conversation are, well, not there I guess.
Then we have those asl’ers, guys who like throw tantrum online and try to get your attention with obnoxious remarks, the sorry butt-kissers, and the really sad sexually desperate boys who try cybering with everything that talks, including bots...
But maybe your problem is in attracting the wrong type of guys in the real world who ask you for your IM and/or going to the wrong chat rooms.
Because for me, you see, it's quite the opposite:
Once I find out a girl is actually worth getting to know a little more, and I get her IM, I am about 90% sure that I can take the conversation anywhere from there. I lead the conversation by making suggestiong of where the discussion should head and by controlling the pace at which private information is revealed. How long the chat lasts depends on either how quickly she gets boring to me, or what I want to do with this girl, not visa versa.
When you have a silver tongue, it is pretty deadly to the ladies online.
Is it just me or do I sense a sudden strong desire from the male population to get their hands on this mojo of mine?
Hm...what to do...what to do...
Well then, just this once boys, I'll tell you the ingredients to my magic:
Confidence + humor + show of decent intelligence (correct grammar, all girls worth talking to appreciate men who have an IQ above “lol”) + and last but not least, a slight pinch of genuine interest in the lady (very important; must be subtle enough that its not blaringly obvious and yet keeps them guessing and on the edge of the keyboard :o)
...and do mix in that order.
Follow this formula, it work like a charm.

You havent meet the right people yet...keep searching just like you did in your home town. Dont give up. You will find the best friend you could ever find online AND MAYBE THE TRUE LOVE OF YOUR LIFE...I did and its been a rollercoaster but we have grow from our mistakes.
