n the movie "An Affair to Remember", Cary Grant calls his grandmother "Janou". Is that a first name in French or is it a "pet name" for his grandmother?

It's killing me that I can't give a definitive answer to this question. It's one I've had for many years myself, but never got a clear answer. Clearly, Janou is the grandmother's name. Whether it is her last name or first name is the question. Even in French, the name "Janou" can be found as both first and last names. My personal feeling is that it is her first name, because Niki says, "Dear Janou". I wouldn't think he'd say, "Dear Smith". He would more likely say, "Dear Janice". Even more likely, as you suggest, it is a nickname or "pet name" that evolved for her, in the order of "Dear Grandma", though it would have been a personal term, as I don't find any references to "Janou" meaning grandmother in any way.

I think the true answer to this may never be found. It's probably buried with Leo McCary!

An Affair to Remember is great. Also consider his comedies: Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House The Philadelphia Story The Awful Truth The Bachelor and the Bobbysoxer I Was a Male War Bride And Blonde Venus with Marlene Dietrich and Suzy with Jean Harlow. Even that early in his career he was loaded with star power.

I too have always loved the name "Janou" for grandmother and thought if I ever became one that this would be my name. I have also looked and looked to find the out the meaning of this name. I also thought it was French but it dose not show up as French in any translation. But, I found it!!!! I found one source that says she did not live in Southern France but on the island of Madeira, a Portuguese Island. Turns out "Janou" means grandmother in Portuguese. Do you love it!!!! SGK

On IMDB, she is listed at Grandma Janou. It is a first name and a family name, so it could be her name.
