1. Go to www.freecycle.org and give away things you don't really need. That way you save on landfill too. Lazy people throw out, sensible people recycle and hey, it makes you feel good too.

2. Put like things in the same place. Just doing that is one hell of a task. You will soon realise that you have more than one (or one pair) of the same thing, which is one too many.

3. Shred things with your address or personal details on before you throw them.

4. If you have a garden, buy a compost bin (and read the advice).

5. Whenever you are going from one room to another, pick up one item that's out of place and take it with you. For example, pick up that old magazine off the living room floor and detour to the recycling bin out back if you were going to the kitchen. When you come back, bring something back with you that should live in the living room.

6. If an object has neither beauty or of sentimental value to you, or has no specific use, then consider getting rid of it (see 1 above).

7. Wander round Ikea (and don't take your purse/wallet) to get some clever ideas about storage.

8. Use the vacuum cleaner regularly. No point being tidy in a dirty house.

9. If you ever say, "I am bored", get a box of something in a mess and sort it out and don't stop till you're done. No excuses.

10. When you're all sorted, lock the door, switch off the phone, crack open a bottle, sit back, relax and congratulate yourself on being so damn tidy.

The biggest mistake people make is looking at "The Whole Thing". And then that overwhelms you to never getting around to it. Instead peice everything off into little jobs. For instance, Like a messy room. First, pick up all the clothes and put them in the proper places. Next pick up all the dishes. Next, Clean off the tops of dressers. Next, Sweep up everything on the floor. Next, go thru all the drawers and sort...Do you see? By breaking each thing down as little jobs, you will eventually get it all together! And it doesnt seem overwhelming.

Yeah, so you are half way there then.

Just get on with it and stop pontificating.

Life is so much less stressful if you are a bit tidy - but not obsessive!
