It's a Boy!!! Or is it a Girl???

- Sexing Your Turtle -

Well, does it really matter if you have a male or female turtle? Yes, it does because you might end up with several bouncing bundles of green joy if you're not careful. Here are some easy tips to follow to determine what sex your turtle. Please note that the following traits do not begin to reveal themselves until the turtle is approximately 5 years old.

*** Note *** This sexing information concerns Red-Eared Sliders so I do not know how relevant it is to other species of water turtles.
Congratulations, it's a Boy!!!
1. Long (I mean, real long) claws on the front paws.
2. A fat tail and it is longer than a female's tail.
3. A slight concaved curve on the bottom part of the shell.
4. You might notice more aggressive tendencies.
5. The cloaca (opening) is closer to the tip of the tail than the body.
No wait! It's a Girl!!!
1. Shorter claws than a male's claws.
2. A shorter, thinner tail.
3. Flatter plastron (bottom of the shell).
4. females tend to be larger than males.
5. The cloaca (opening) on the tail is closer to the body than the tip of the tail.

Sorry that I'm a turtle fanatic. There are many ways to tell and here are all the theories i know. THE IRIS THEORY- male turtles have red to orange iris' ( iris= the colored part of the eye ) and female turtles have purple to brown iris'. THE TAIL THEORY- Male turtles have long fat tails and female turtles have short skinny tails. THE BOTTOM OF THE SHELL THEORY- Male turtle's bottom part of the shell is concaved not to be funny but to get on top of a female and have sex. A female turtle's bottom part of the shell is convex. and finally my theory called THE URINATION THEORY- When a female turtle pees it just comes out of its butt no big deal but if you watch a male turtle pee a violet penis like thing comes out of its butt then it pees. I hope these theories help you in some way. Turtles Rock!!!

Turn it over and look at the base of the tail right before it connects with the shell. Females have a long slit going across; the marking on a male is smaller (of course, without a comparison, it may be hard to tell). Also can vary species to species.

Some species have special ways to tell, but in general...

MALE: Long, skinny tail. In-curved belly

FEMALE: Short, wide tail. Flat or out-curved belly

Note- in some species, this can be hard to tell without other turtles to compare to.

Note also- it is REALLY hard to tell with young turtles!
