What is the relationship between this kind of plot and significance, anyway? Wouldn't it make more sense to plot significance lines?

I guess what I'm asking is: Necessarily.

What if it is close?

if the standard error bars don't overlap then there is a significant difference between the 2 methods used, or results, (or whatever)

the standard error bars are bars used to calculate any possible error in the results...you can imagine them kind of like extra plots to the bar....so if they overlap, then it could be possible that you could get the same result for both methods used, and the results are therefore not significant.

....i think...I'm not thinking very hard on this one so you might want to wait for more reliable answers...
