It's expensive. If you smoke a pack a day, it can cost you more than $2,000 a year. You'll be able to save the money you spend on tobacco to buy yourself a closet full of clothes, a bike, or put a down payment on a car!
It turns your teeth yellow and it makes your breath, hair, and clothes stink.
Smoking keeps athletes from reaching their peak performance because smokers get short of breath more easily. Being smoke-free will help improve your athletic abilities.
Nonsmokers might not want to be around people while they're smoking, so smokers can miss out on spending time with potential friends, girlfriends, or boyfriends. And because many places don't allow smoking, smokers often have to stand outside while everyone else is inside. When you quit smoking, you'll have more freedom to go where you want - when you want.
Why is it hard to quit? Quitting can be tough - at least for many people. Smokers may have started smoking because their friends did or because it seemed cool. But they keep on smoking because they're addicted to nicotine, one of the chemicals in cigarettes and smokeless tobacco. Nicotine is both a stimulant and a depressant. That means nicotine increases the heart rate at first and makes people feel more alert (like caffeine, another stimulant). Then it causes depression and fatigue. The depression and fatigue - and the drug withdrawal from nicotine - make people crave another cigarette to perk up again. According to many experts, the nicotine in tobacco is as addictive as cocaine or heroin. But don't be discouraged; about 44 million Americans have already quit smoking for good. These strategies can help you quit, too:

First you have to understand the dynamics of nicotine. While it is as addictive as heroin or morphine (nicotine is one of the most addictive substances on earth), just about everything you put into your system does eventually get metabolized. That is, it doe leave your system.
Nicotine has been studied for generations. All the nicotine that is in your system now will be gone in about 72 hours. That is how long the PHYSICAL addiction lasts. After the 72 hours the addiction is GONE and any urge to smoke can best be described as the same addiction that little kids have to THUMB SUCKING! If you've ever had a child who sucks his or her fingers you know how difficult it it to get them to stop. Usually when they get a little older they realize on their own that they should stop, and they do.
One easy way to stop smoking is to wait until you are really sick with a cold or flu and try to not smoke for at least 72 hours, which is easier if you are already totally miserable anyway from the cold. It is important to understand that after the 72 hrs you don't have any physical need anymore! Ask yourself, "do I really need to suck my thumb? " As an adult the obvious answer is NO. After a few months the urges will be gone. Another thing about the urge to smoke after quitting is that after a very few minutes it goes away once the nicotine is no longer there. You will be remembering the addiction without being addicted, and understanding tha nature of the problem will get you through. Good Luck!

I have been a non-smoker for 2 weeks now. What I did was I used the patch but I did not follow the directions so that I did not get addicted to the patch too. Here is what I did: I used the 21mg patches for 14 days
I used the 14mg patches for 7 days
I used the 7mg patches for 7 days
I will start the 7mg patches on Friday and that will be my last week. My hubby is using the Nicorette gum he does not like the patches. I think the trick is depending on the Lord and remembering all the positive things that happen when you are a non-smoker. I hope this helps.

I've heard that smoking is harder to quit than heroin. If you have ever gone to a 12 step program the people are smoking like chimneys. When you want to quit for You and not because others want you to, you will. Cold turkey is the best but it is also the hardest. Good Luck.

I just went cold turkey!
I know you might say this is too hard but, I was a three-pack-a-day smoker and I got fed up with my clothes smelling like smoke and really bad breath, plus shortness of breath! i couldn't walk up a flight of steps with out stopping in the middle, my heart was racing that bad!
You won't believe all the toxic and other junk that is in a cigarette besides a little it of tobacco for flavor!
. You might want to try the gum or patch too. I didn't, but it might help you some.
