I think the way it works is that instead of being "black and white" per se, it's more that most of the time specific colors or any colors won't stand out, though there might be something that we remember from our dreams that was colorful. Lots of people will interpret symbolism onto the colors we remember dreaming, but generally we won't remember many colors, if there were any.

People don't actually see things in their dreams. Electrical impulses present ideas into your mind. Whether they are in black and white or in color would be different for each dream and person.
Think about it, blind people can dream can't they?
I've had dreams that I see in black and white and in color.

Mostly Color if you had born after 60's and Both B&W and Color before 60's as color picture transmittion (Cinema & TV) started late 60's. Dreams comes from celluloid.

This question would not have existed before the advent of photography. Before that no one would have conceived of seeing moving images in anything other than full color. If you dream in B&W it is because of old movies. Everyone dreams in color.
