Holistic care can cover a multitude of therapies and approaches.

A general holistic approach is looking at the body as a whole, realising that the separate parts of our bodies are all interlinked and influence each other.
For example, there are around 70 causes of headaches, instead of giving painkillers, a holistic therapist/approach will look for the cause of the headache and treat this rather than just the symptom.
It usually looks at lifestyle such as diet, exercises, stress levels etc and aims to restore you to being healthy, rather than not ill. (That is a whole topic in itself but there is a big difference!)

Most 'complementary/alternative' therapies take a holistic approach: Herbal medicine, Acupuncture, Chiropractic, Aromatherapy etc etc.

Everything that was already given as an answer is correct. I just want to add that by looking at all aspects of someone's life, such as stress levels, diet, exercise, work life, home life, posture, water intake etc you are looking at a deeper, more whole level to the person - unfortunately, many (but not all) doctors just treat the symptom and never look at the cause. If you treat the cause, and treat the whole person, body, mind & spirit it leads to better health and better habits which is benefical in the long run. Holistic Care has no bad side-effects and can treat many ailments sucessfully. Having said that, any serious health issues such also be checked out by the doctor to be safe. Hope this helps.

In alternative medicine, a holistic approach to healing recognises that the emotional, mental, spiritual and physical elements of each person comprise a system, and attempts to treat the whole person, concentrating on the cause of the illness as well as symptoms.
Examples of holistic therapies include Acupuncture, Ayurveda, Chinese medicine, Indian Head Massage, Reiki, Reflexology and Homoeopathy. They usually do not originate from the western medical-scientific tradition.

Basically, this mean that holistic care looks at the underlying elements of an illness or disease as well as treating the symptoms with therapy and/or medication.

Holistic care looks at the body as a whole.

As such.. the general school of thought in holistic care is that as long as we take good care of our bodies and provide what it needs, we are able to heal ourselves.

To be healthy is to be able to 'heal- thy'.

We just need to eat right and treat our bodies well.
