Now I always thought that it was only if someone near to you yawned that it caused you to yawn.... but she was driving past in her car... and I yawned 2 mins later... she wasn't that boring! Why is it so easy to 'catch a yawn'?
Do you yawn whilst reading this? or is it a boring Q?

Im not exactly sure as to why a yawn is contagiouse but a yawn is the bodys way of getting extra oxygen levels in the blood. More oxygen = better performance. maybe when you see someone else yawn subconciously your brain goes OMG they gonna be better than me i better yawn now too!

i heard yawning was to do with a lack of oxygen to the brain

and im guessing that people yawning or talking about yawning makes your brain panic about the possible lack of oxyen and so it starts a yawn just in case

have you ever read the children's book 'wide-awake jake' by helen young? it's about a young boy named jake who cannot sleep so he sets off to find the 'yami of yawn'.

it's a fabulous bedtime book (circa 1974 i think) using the premise that if you yawn then so will others around you, so when jake comes across a giant he yawns and the giant yawns and falls asleep...ditto the lion etc

doesn't answer your question, but remembering it made me smile (...and yawn!) :o)

Yawn monkeys

Invisible little primates that jump from person to person making them yawn.

There in the same category as itching slugs, giggle ferrets and sneeze spiders

When you yawn, you screw up the pressure around you and other people have to yawn to fix their level of pressure
