Kerry killed a classmate in a "hunting accident" by shooting him in the back.

In the military, it is considered in bad taste to shoot a retreating foe in the back when it involves individual shots and not just a broad sweeping of the terrain. Kerry is reported to have not shot at all until a Vietnamese attack was known to be retreating in a confused manner and only then did he rise up and begin shooting at their backs. This is greatly frowned-on by real military fighters.

In my opinion, any American man or woman, regardless of their politics, who answers the call to duty and who conduct themselves in an acceptable military manner is an American patriot and should be afforded due respect.
