I don't know, but earning R5 a day in South Africa is illegal. Employers who are found to be paying their employees R5 a day get fined themselves. A typical example of one of the lowest paying jobs in South Africa is a House Maid. They do get R5, but every hour and NOT a day. For instance I pay my maid R1 350 a month, that is roughly R6.14 an hour. When I employed her the Labour Law automatically came into force. Having laid down her responsibilities the Labour Law concluded that I had to pay her this much. An employer is allowed to pay his/her employees any amount of money so long as it doesn't fall below the minimum wage-line assessed on individual basis and drawn by the Dept of Labour. Earning R5 a day is totally unacceptable and very illegal, and your friend should take the matter to the nearest Dept of Labour which will make sure that he gets a refund based on what he was supposed to earn from the time he started working. They will also make sure that he doesn't get fired as a result of a grudge an employer might hold against him.

Um, ok so I'm not hot on exchange rates, but I have a couple of South African friends and they tell me the pay isn't that great over there. These SA friends had both left the country to find better paid work in England and New Zealand.

Are you complaining, concerned ... what is it that you are asking? what is 5 rand a day worth in U.S. dollars? (or do you mean 5 grand as in 5K/5,000.00). If that's the case then your friend is doing VERY WELL !!! If he works every day he's earning 150K a month. But let's say he works 4 days a week that's 80K a month. However, if you do mean 5 rand then whatever the exchange rate is rand v U.S. dollar.

I live in South Africa and that's absolute rubbish. Nobody's stupid enough to actually work for R5 a day, you can get more cash simply by begging in the street, haha.
According to www.iol.co.za today, the current exchange rate is R6.94 to $1.
