The peacock logo came in 1956 when NBC started doing more broadcasting in color. The rainbow of colors demonstrated the richness of the signal and was a symbol of color in an otherwise black and white world.

The CBS eye is a graphic created by William Golden in 1951. It was based on a Dutch folk art. It was only suppose to be there for one season but the President at that time Frank Stanton wanted to keep it around. Why did they go with the eye? Probably because they thought it looked cool.

The real question is why FOX's logo has never included a Fox.

Because NBC's programming is pretty and colourful whereas CBS's is more intelligent because it sees everything! UPN can spell out their initials, yay!
