Jehovah was responsible for the original watering of the ground by means of a mist arising from the earth, and he established the laws governing evaporation of water and its precipitation as rain. (Ge 2:5, 6; Job 36:27; Am 5:8; see CLOUD; MIST; RAIN.) On the second creative day, God produced an expanse by having some water remain on earth while raising a great quantity high above the globe; the waters above the expanse undoubtedly supplied the water whereby the wicked were later destroyed in the Flood of Noah’s day.—Ge 1:6-8; 7:11, 17-24; Isa 54:9.

As old as the universe.

Well, almost because it would take a tiny bit of time before the Hydrogen molecule bind with those two of Oxygen.

That is if the question refers to "water" and not water here on earth and even then... Who can say that there isn't a single water molecule on Earth dating from way back in time to the big bang?

Well, Charles G, has the most concise answer so far.

The earth in the early days of the Solar System was little more than molten lava, also, it had just been "brushed" by a planetary object that had knocked 1/4 of its size off to create the Moon, which at that time was 18 times closer in orbit to the earth and creating even MORE massive tidal forces. Making incredible volcanos on the earth and upheaveals the size of near mountains under where the moon went when it travelled around the planet.

Over the millions of years, the moon travelled further and further away, allowing the forces to die down and cometary objects to fall to earth. Comets ARE mostly snowballs, containing dust and WATER. Over billions of years, we built up a steady supply of water leading to our "massive" supply that we have today. This was contained in our atmosphere, slowly cooling our planet, alleviating the volcanic temperatures. Bringing many of the poisonous gases to earth in the rains along with other "dirty" items in the atmosphere. Without rain, the earth would be entirely unliveable. So, most scientist agree, that we got the earths water from "cometary" sources like Halley's Comet and this is why over the millenia they get smaller, as they travel around the sun, the sun melts the ice and the "dust stays behind" that creates the long "tails."

So, the cometery debris that formed the comets had to already be here from somewhere.

That's the question.

there are always 2 ways on answering anything in this universe: scientifically or religiously.

to answer how old is water i think is impossible by science. we can't apply Carbon dating because water is always regenerated. it follows its own cycle. we may be able to see "old waters" trapped during the ice age but is that really the time when water started to exists? i don't think so.

other people said that water existed as long as the H2O bonds are exists. that might be true as long as water is always has the same chemical bond, H2O.
how can we assure that before the big meteor hit that wiped out dinosaur, the water is also H2O and not other?

so i prefer to understand this question religiously. the water is very old and maybe the only creation that is older than water is only "universe" and "time" itself.

How old is time ?? we never know :)

I have never seen so many "I don't really know" answers before... wow...

Anyway, the water on Earth has been around for a long time. Think back to when the earth was just formed. It was hot. Constantly there were volcanoes erupting. It was basically your vision of hell. While the volcanoes were erupting, they were releasing the gasses that would one day become our atmosphere, and our water. Eventually the earth began to cool, and with the cooling came the earths first rain. So to compare ages, while its components have been around since the beginning of the universe, water is still younger than the earth.

Water in general here on earth is as old as the earth for in Genesis in just about the first sentence it talks of the spirit of God stirring above the water, for the first thing(s) He created was the heavens and the earth and the earth was a chaotic mass covered with raging waters and steeped in darkness. There is controversy as to the age of the earth. Some say 5000 and some years while others say billion plus years. Its not something I devote a lot of my time to. But in evolution life began in the oceans so whichever you believe, water its agreed on is ancient.

God created the heavens and the earth. So that's how old water is in earth time. Around 5 to 10 billion years. Your guess is as good as mine.
Of course man is not as old as water. Man was created about 5 thousand years or so ago.

Water is as old as the world we live in without water there would be no life on earth.

The story of a Drop in the Ocean
Well before we drank it the dinosaurs did, excreted it, then it evaporated under the sun. It was drank multitudes of times by multitudes of creatures and plants. It was in the ocean,in a lake, a puddle.. it evaporated again then came down as rain on the head of a very very distant relative, And you know what happened next it evaporated again and was last seen falling from the canopy of a huge Amazonian tree onto the back of an ant.... water is reusable yummy
