If you're going to get a gift card, get one from Amazon - that way no matter where they are, they can use it.
You might hit a bookstore and look for a book on the history of hockey or something in that arena, and sign inside the front cover with a short paragraph on how much fun you've had and memories you've made together. That's a lot more personal and will keep the memory of your time as a team fresh.

gift cards are too impersonal. You've known him for 8 years, surely there is something you know he would like! if not then go to the mall and window shop and think to yourself " oh that doll is something my cousins daughter would like, oh that pair of shoes is something my wife would like" and so on and perhaps you can find something for your team mate.
