get a tank with a filter and also clean the tank regularly even though thats the filters job...feed them on time, dont put TOO much water all the way to the top or they won't get enough oxygen, fake plants are better cuz real plants when the lights are off will take the fish's oxygen (its true) and give it tons of tlc and dont spoil it :P

Many people buy feeder fish as pets (they are the ones that are like 10 for $1). This is a common mistake and it is what has given the goldfish the reputation for only living until their first meal. Feeder fish are raised just to be that-someone elses food. They have many congenital defects. Make sure you buy a true gold fish to start (they are usually prettier anyhow). Changing the water once a week to once every 10 days is a good rule if you are bowl raising your fish. If you have a filter set up, you can do it a bit more infrequently. When feeding your new pet remember that their stomach is only as big as their eye, overfeeding is a big problem with fish because their indicatior that they are full doesn't work. Consider getting a school of fish instead of just one-most fish are naturally social and do better in groups of their own kind. Good luck!

Get a real aquarium with a strong filter, at least 15 gallons for 1 goldfish, 30 gallons for 2 or 3.

Do 10% water changes every week, using a siphon gravel vacuum and a bucket. Always add a dechlorinator to the tap water before adding it to the tank.

Get a testing kit and test for ammonia, nitrates, and pH.

Feed a pinch of food once a day.

Never overcrowd the tank, never overfeed, always keep a filter running and keep the filter material free of debris, always do weekly water changes and use your test kits to monitor the water quality.

If you do all that, there's no reason why your fish won't thrive for years.

make sure your gold fish have a nice protective slime coat, you can buy stress-ex from any ppetstore to help with this it contains aloe and really helps in the prevention against disease. I also buy the feeder fish for my turtle, and whoever survives for a couple months gets transfered to a safe tank, so feederfish can be raised and have a long happy life

The first thing is to get a aquarium with a filter. This will help keep the water clean and it will also keep you from having to change the water every week.

it depends on your breed of goldfish. some have very short life spans. just clean the tank once a week and feed them lightly

GOLDFISH ARE USUALLY REALLY HARD TO KILL. AS LONG AS YOU FEED THEM AND CLEAN THEIR TANK THEY ARE HAPPY AND HARDY.
