vicky, it's nothing to be embarassed of. Just tell ur mother - not only she won't get mad at u, but she will be relieved: u r supposed 2 go through this at ur age, and ur mom knows that.
Tell her like this: "Mum, guess what, I've got my first period".
My mum was actually quite happy, and sat and talked 2 me.
I guess it's best if u tell in the evening, when she is relaxed. And don't try 2 hide it from her, because she will occasionally find out about it and will get sad when she realizes u didn't tell her.
It's best to talk 2 her now, because the 'ugliest' thing abt periods is that u have 2 decide abt the summer holidays, because u can't sunbath if ur having ur period, u know...
and 4 more tips check this site -www.mum.org (It's not the best design, and it's pretty hard 2 find what ur really looking 4, but there r some interesting things there - I found it quite useful...)
oh, and don't worry 2 much - it's just something natural...

If you are shy even around your family sometimes, ask your Mom if you can talk to her privately. Then just say, "Mom, today, I got my period for the first time." You should never be embarrased because it is your mom, she probably had to go through the same exact thing about getting it the first time and telling her mom. Just don't be sure and ask for help if you need it. Hopefully your mom is always supportive!

Just tell her. You should not be embarrassed as this happens to every young woman. Your Mom will understand because she too has periods and has had them for years. Ask some of your friends how they told their Moms and go from there.

No it's a natural thing. You should be able to tell your mom anything embarassing. She has been through all the embarassing stuff in your life up to now, so what is the change? She will know what to do and what to tell you.

You should just tell her. There is no special way. There's nothing wrong with it, its natural...happens to all girls. You shouldn't be embarrassed. Do you feel embarrassed? Remember your mom had to tell her mom the same thing before you so she already knows its coming.

Of course you should NOT be embarrassed...why should you be...you're female, it's what happens to us...just tell her right out, she probably knows you are about the right age to have that occur...and she needs to know you've gotten it and to make sure you have the proper products and knowledge to deal with it...
It's expected of you to get your period sweetie...it's not like getting pregnant and fearing telling your folks...this is something that IS supposed to happen to you at a young age...

Your mom should have already prepared you for what to expect when it arrived, also to inform her as soon as it does...if not, then get her alone and gently tell her.
No way should you be embarrassed about anything, some families go out and celebrate this wonderful occasion!!

Why should you be embarrased? In fact you should be proud that you're already officially a woman now. Besides, she can give you tips on how to avoid those embarassing situations and "symptoms" that are bound to happen during your period.

You should definitely not be embarrassed. It happens to all of us. Hell, mine waited so long to come, I was beginning to wonder if it was going to come at all! Don't make it a big deal. Like, don't sit down and say, "Mom, we need to talk." You know... just blurt it out sometime when it's just you two. It'll be all right - she'll totally support you.
