Charity shops are a great place to shop. You find great things at great prices, often one of a kind items. (Great for you because your snobby friend won't have the same thing!) It also supports the charity that runs the store... Cancer Society Discovery Shops are the best!! Some Humane Societies run charity shops, and there's a host of others.
There are all kinds of charity stores, some are more discriminating about what donations they accept than others. It also depends on what area the store is in. For instance, the charity (or thrift) shops near or on military bases have a really neat selection because the military families sometimes have to just pick up and go and can't take a lot of their stuff with them half way across the world. (Hawaii's are always stuffed with all manner of things from vintage, to brand new, etc... My mother bought each of us a full set of Le Creuset cookware there. They even had a brand new hot tub at one!)
Anyway, there is nothing wrong with shopping in a charity store. The point is to help that charity and find great deals for yourself. If your friend wants to go to the mall and pay a fortune to look like everyone else... let her. Smile, tag along if you like, and buy yourself a treat with all the $$$ you saved.

If by charity shops you mean second hand shops, I love them. I find really cool stuff there. Also while all of the little tarts are spending all of their money on overpriced, child labor made clothes from the local mall I am investing in commodities and will be able to retire in about 5 years.

Great place to shop. Wide varity of choice, much of the clothes are very expensive lables. All are durable and most are quality.
Don't tell them where you buy your clothes. Tell them it is your secret shop.

I wouldn't shop in one. I don't want anything that is used. No telling who had it last.
