Probably because it is too European for them. The US like American based sports. Their neighbors to the North (Canada) enjoy F1 more than Nascars.

IRL&Champ are close to F1 i believe the IRL has only on engine manufacturer now, but they still arent as technical in their vehicals as F1 is. I have been to races of all four and find IRL&Champ to be very exciting, as well as Nascar, however the F1 series seems to be won by the 5th lap not only here at the American GP but also in europe. A majority of Americans like a little more excitement. The reason Nascar does better than IRL&Champ is primarily because their is still competition at the manufacturer level as well. F1 and Nascar may be very different but in one aspect they are the same some people follow a driver some follow a team or a car brand. F1 races I went to I saw more about the car brands than about the drivers.

F1 is not televised in the US for all the races only some. Indy Car is growing and Champ car is second to Indy and is hardly ever on TV. To the person below who said that F1 is dominated by Michael you should check and see who won the championship last year. Indy Car has the closest races while F1 fails to have many close races however they don't race on ovals. NASCAR is to much drama for me but everyone likes to hear about the personal issues that everyone seems to have.

HA HA HA.....someone here said "F1 cars seem flimsy and weak, in a collision they shatter like a porcelain teacup."
My answer to that person is "How many drivers have died during the race in the last 10 years in both F1 and Nascar". Now compare both the figure and decide between the two which is porcelain teacup :)
My answer to the original question is - F1 requires a lot of skill - both for the drivers and the support engineers. Its not just about speed but should also have little brain.

Nascar is a recent phenomenon (at least the explosive popularity is). When Indy cars ruled the roost, F1 was ignored in this country too.
Hey, we hate soccer (futbol) too. And there's nothing wrong with that. Who says we have to love everything they love in Europe? I like Nascar, IRL, and F1, but I could care less if anybody else does.

I would assume that Americans have chosen to continue to embrace the antiquated technology of NASCAR because it reflects the American style of automobiles. Going back to the 1950's & 60's American cars were large, flashy, and had huge engines with tons of horsepower. You also have to factor in bootlegging in the southern states, which is basically how NASCAR was formed, making NASCAR a truly American form of motorsport. I am personally a huge F1 fan and cannot watch over 20 minutes of a NASCAR race, but to each his own.

People have different opinions. I love NASCAR! I find F1 VERY boring. That's why I don't like it. Once in a while I'll watch IRL, but NASCAR will always be my favorite sport.

I have followed F1 for many years and while I think the sport has deteriorated in the last decade or so I still enjoy it. I also watch SCCA events, and 12 & 24 hour type races. I occasionally watch Champ Cars & IRL. I wish CAN-AM was still around.
NASCAR doesn't come close to being as entertaining as any of them.

That is a great question. I enjoy watching NASCAR but F1 to me seems to be more endurance than NASCAR. I don't F1 is boring, I feel that people should give it a try at least once.

The world likes soccer. The US likes football
the world likes F1.... Us likes Nascar
MotoGP.... AMA Superbikes
there's definitely some kind of propaganda how america always ends up liking what the rest of the world just don't get. and vice versa. there's even that Metric and English measurement system thing that's gives worse contrasts.
F1, soccer's world cup, Motogp have proven though, to attract more spectators around the world. in their own categories, they are the biggest business in sports industry. Billions of dollars spent to get these sports going. Someone in the US spotted this in the past and created their own thing to distract american spectators.
subsequently that explains the absence of american ownerships, athletes, or even interests in sports that the US doesn't show to americans.
The american spectators then turned out to be the "victims" (or acustomed) as they became content with their own big sports. This is really genius though, business wise, they're able to maintain much of their business within their borders.
we just continue what we enjoy and not worry about what others don't. Beyond sports aspects, personally i like F1 because there's definitely a lot more technicality, engineered products, involvements of personnel and expertise.
have fun.

Don't generalize. I like F1 and hate nascar. F1 is not shown as much so it does not get an audience. Most Americans can only follow one direction. Forget about right hand turns.
