Is it me or is the current republican party (neoconservatives as the lefties call them) becoming more fiscally liberal, what ever happened to the sensible spending policies.

I have no idea how several of the current Republicans can even call themselves Republicans with the way they do things. I have always been a Rep. and I am stunned on a daily basis with the direction the Rep. leadership is going.

If this continues, the Reps will prove the Dems correct in calling us the party of, by, and for the RICH.

These are the things I would like to see my party start doing (financially speaking):

Move to a consumption tax rather than an income tax. This will encourage saving and discourage the debt-based economy we are currently mired in.

Lift the limit on Social Security taxes from the current 90k to unlimited. Currently, someone making 100k pays the same amount into SS as someone making 900k.

Create a Federal spending limit that increases at the inflation rate +1 or 2%.

Institute a balanced budget law that requires the Federal govt to put forth a balanced budget (with exceptions made for 1-time events like wars and natural disasters).

Get rid of the government's pension plans in favor of 401k plans.

Yes. That is one of the main problems for the GOP. There is an alliance between the neo-conservatives and the old guard "Rockefeller" Republicans who were far more fiscally moderate and liberal than the more conservative republicans who ascended to party domination with the Reagan Revolution. President Bush and his father were and are part of the "Rockefeller" wing. From my observations, they reject conservative spending policies and tend to be more statist than most conservatives. Bush 43 has co-opted tax cuts into his platform because he saw the benefit to government that it actually generated MORE revenue than higher taxes. That gives him more money to broaden the government according to the statist ideals of his old guard republicans and also dole out more pork to those wings of the party in Congress. The liberals may have a legitimate complaint. After all, he and his neocon/Rockefeller buddies in Congress seem as good or better at giving away pork than they are!

Yes; this is one of the reasons why I'm critical of Bush. I don't hate him or think he's Hiter, but I don't think he's perfect either.
He does have this habit of throwing money at a problem and hoping it will work itself out (Katrina), of using pointless ideas to help the economy (give everyone a bonus check and then be surprised when they use it to pay bills and not shop), and take a wishy-washy approach to immigrant labor.
These actions are not reflective of what real Republicans are like. Even Ann Coulter has turned on Bush. But, sad to say, liberals are right about one thing -- some people will support Bush no matter what, because they don't know what Republicans are supposed to be.

This is the price we all are paying for 23 years of appeasing and using diplomacy to bring peace to the middle east. Wars are expensive and it could of been cheaper a long time ago, but hind sight is 20/20.

It's not just you. It's gotten completely out of hand. Who will stand up for limited government?
