I need to know what is happening in the world and others' views. If I become ignorant then I would become arrogant in my lack of knowledge and understanding of others' opinions.

We like to watch the news because we like to know what is going on in the world.

A) So we can compare it with what happened to us that day and go, "Whew! Lucked out again!"

B) So we can feel superior to any schmuck who got victimized.

C) So we can figure out how much longer we got 'til some megalomanical idiot pushes the button and we all turn to radioactive dust high in the stratosphere.

D) So we can see and hear the scores of our fav teams without having to fool with inky newsprint.

E) To get a handle on what lies are being told by which politicians that day.

F) Because the anchorperson is either a hunk or a babe or there's one of each and you need a shot of eye candy to top off the day.

G) You're sick and tired of Wheel of Fortune, you don't want to watch Thomas the Tank Engine and the news is all you got left.

H) You spotted a film crew near an accident that you witnessed. They interviewed you and you've rushed home to try and catch the interview and SEE YOURSELF ON TV! WOW!

I) The tv was already turned on to the news when you flopped exhausted in your Barcalounger and you can't find the remote to switch to a cable show.

J) You actually still believe that news shows show news. (You have our deepest compassion).

I don't know anyone who watches the news. I initiate conversations and ask if they heard about so and so and they say no and tell me they don't like to watch the news. If I miss the news one day I feel lost. I think we need to know about what goes on so that we can make changes.

If we dont know what is happening around the world/country, how can we comment on it or debate it with others?

We watch the news so we have some idea as to what to say when talking about things.

I don't know that we "like" to watch the news, I think it's more like "need" to watch.....so we can stay informed as to what's happening in the world. At least that's the way I see it.

If anybody actually "likes" watching it, it could be the train-wreck factor at work.

only 3 answers so far and 2 of those are infantile, what's happened to the world?
We like to watch the news because as social animals we like to know what is happening to our fellow men in the wider world, to help wherever we can, or just enjoy the diversity that is life.
Will a sensible answer do?

Enquiring minds want to know.

Seriously, we like to be informed so we're not caught off guard, so we have some basis for decision making, so we understand what the world is like and what our place is in it. And we don't like to appear stupid around others who may be better informed.

And "people watching" is the oldest form of entertainment.
