It's not a lot of work really. Set the tank up by putting your gravel and ornaments in first with the airation equipment heater and filter all in place. Then treat tap water with aqua-safe before filling the tank with the treated water.
Allow the filter and the air pumps to run for 7 days before you buy any fish. After that you can add a few fish at a time on a weekly basis or longer and as long as you treat the water every few weeks and change 10% of the water every 2 weeks, Buy a syphoning hose that sucks the dirt out of the stones to do that every month and other than that pretty much leace them alone they are not tended to in the wild are they?
I just ran my tank down cos we're moving and i had fish that were well over a year old plus raised fry so I do know.

Actually its easier then keeping gold fish, think about it, how many people do you know who have an old goldfish?
Tropical fish can be more expensive to buy and the equipment costs more but in the long run they live longer if you keep the conditions right.
Erm where to start, I'll presume you don't know anything about tropical fish so bare with me, the water needs to be a certain temperature but you buy heaters to do this and a thermometer to keep this in check also you need a filter and a pump a filter filters the water keeping it clean and the pump puts oxygen into the water which the fish need! but all you need to do is go to a tropical fish farmer and tell them your a beginner they will give you a beginners kit or if you have more money to spend they will give you the best equipment for your fish, both work well but as you get to learn about your fish you can update on their equipment. so the answer to your question is, it isn't probably easier then goldfish. Oh I forgot, if you wanted to breed fish, they breed and produce better in warm waters even goldfish but I don't mean fry them, tropical fish need to be in temps of 18-24 degrees and goldfish can happily survive in the same temps.

I used to have a tropical tank. They are hard work to begin with as you need to set it up and then you have to wait a week with the tank full of water before adding the fish. Our tank went completely green probably due to knackered equipment. It's all worth it though as watching littlw fishies is so relaxing. Good luck!

Hard? well it does require work. I have a water system in my basement that makes the salt water, and fresh water as well! this cost me a nice penny!
Coral reef is really really really hard, but as far as just a tropical tank for fish with non living rock isnt that hard. More of a stress relief if you are into these things!

initial setup is a pain in the but , part change water weekly at the same time wipe clean inside of tank. once a month big clean out of all the cr"p at the bottom. If you think thats hard work don't do it. that is for a tropical tank
a marine tank (nemo style), that X100

It is just like taking care of a cat or dog, you must feed the fish everyday change the water every one or two weeks. Sometimes you might need to clean the sides of the tank to get the algae off or vacuum your gravel, but when you look past that routine maitenence and look at the beauty of it that's all that matters. It is definitely rewarding.

a lot of hard work you need to keep the temperature right the acid or alkaline levels it has to be cleaned regular and you have to keep an eye on the fish as they tend to eat each other they get sick quickly if any thing goes wrong with anything in their tank they can also be expensive to buy. sick with the plain old cold water goldfish as their are less temperamental to look after and are more hardy and less work
