I moved to Chicago a few years ago and there are a few places that are key to visit, others you can take or leave.
My list of must-see places include; Sears Tower, Navy Pier, and Michigan Ave.
If you are interested in any of the stuff at the museums, then I would go there too. I went all three (at different times) and thought that the Shedd Aquarium wasn't really worth the money I spent. The planetarium was okay, but we paid extra for the presentations they had and that was really the only cool part. The Field Museum had a lot of stuff and right now there's a King Tut exhibit there, for an extra fee of course. The Museum of Science and Industry is really geared toward younger kids.
Don't get sucked into buying the museum's all-inclusive ticket where you can see all three museums at a "cheaper" price. There is no way to see all three in one day.

Tons to do in Chicago. Chicago Art Institute, the Hancock building, the sears tower, buckingham fountain, navy pier, shedd aquarium, the Haufbrau (great German restaurant, kinda pricey), Museum of science & industry, Lincoln Park Zoo. Most of the museums & the aquaruim have a "free" day every week. Each place is different, so check their websites. My husband and I roller-bladed for miles along the banks of Lake Michigan. It was a blast. Chicago is a great town. I've been to lots of big cities, and it's my favorite.

There's a big King Tut exhibition at the Field Museum. Also, there's Oak St. beach, Michigan Ave., great architectural tours, Lincoln Park Zoo, Navy Pier and so much more. Pick up a daily paper or the Chicago Reader (free) for more ideas.

The museums are top quality. There are two zoos, both are great. The shopping is terrific, there are malls within 30 minutes in every direction, and the shopping along the lakefront downtown is the best for tourists. (a little bit of everything) Whatever kind of music you like, the clubs are hopping. Dance clubs, blues, folk. Make sure you rent a bike from Millenium Park downtown, and ride up and down the lakefront. Go to the top of the Sears Tower, its worth the effort.
