On the side of my laptop, there is a slot with two spaces on top of each other covered by a plastic piece that moves up (like the memory card slot on a PS2, but twice as big).

The opening is about 1/2 - 3/4" tall and about 2 1/2" wide. There are two clicky pieces also, and when they are pressed a plastic piece extends about 1 1/2 inch but does not come out.

What goes into these slots?

This is a PCMCIA or PC Card slot. This allows you to install PC Card modems, wireless network cards, etc. Most of these types of devices now have USB versions, but the PC card versions may be cheaper.

I think you're looking at the PCMCIA slots. You can put various peripherals in there, like a wireless card or a USB hub.
