Does a school like The Rawls Business School at Texas Tech have advantages over other schools? Can you compare an education at this school to one at an ivy league?

Everyone tells me Texas Tech is a heavily recruited school for business exec. Which is what my major is. Is texas tech going to help me get the type of job im wanting? They say they are in the top 50 Buiness schools by newsweek.

A lot of people will tell you that it doesn't matter where you go. That just isn't true. Going to a good school will open doors for you that would remain shut otherwise.

I taught undergraduate level finance classes at Berkeley, MIT and Wharton. The students at those schools were heavily recruited by top firms. Several went to firms like Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan and Morgan Stanley. Students at most other schools probably wouldn't even be able to get an interview withthose firms.

Texas Tech has a decent business school. Rice, UT-Austin and Texas A&M (and perhaps SMU) probably have better B Schools -- but Texas Tech is probably a better choice than any of the other universities in Texas.

It has impact, which school you go to (e.g. some companies will recruit only at certain schools).... but it's not as important as what you know and your abilities to do the job... a good company will hire you without putting too much weight on the school choice, if you're good. If you're not, having a degree from Harvard won't help you KEEP the job... maybe get in the door, but you'll be gone.

One can always compare the school to what kind of job you get. It's not the ultimate, but a good school has connections and can get you in the door. So the place you go to does matter. The better the program you are looking at, the better your chances are.

Look for program specific on what you want to go. Then find the best school that has that program and go for it.

Name sake of a school can help alot if you are applying for jobs out of state.... for example I've never heard of Rawls, but i can name all of the ivy league schools. Also schools with a larger Alumni Association can help.
