I do PC Support for a living. I've got 5 MCP's and a BSEET along with 12 years experience. Some where along the way I got the idea that I know what I'm doing with computers. :)

You DO need to be careful about where you download from. Major companies like Dell, Microsoft, Coke, etc. will be safe. Just be sure you are on THEIR site and not a counterfeit.

I explain other downloads like this to my customers. If someone is ADVERTISING a free download there is probably something wrong with it. Maybe it's really Trial Software, meaning you will have to buy it in a week or two when it quits working or looses Features. (This means it REALLY isn't free. Right?)

Maybe it's loaded with Spy Ware, Trojans, or a Virus. They use the Freeware Install to put the bad stuff on your PC (with your help!!).

You can get a lot of Free Software that is really very good, but you will have to seek it out. The Open Source folks (and others) spend their time, talent, and resources making Software to give away free. They DO NOT spend Advertising dollars on top of that. If someone is ADVERTISING (paying money) to tell you about some free software you should think "What's wrong with this picture?"

You should also have good Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware programs installed, paid for, activated and with up to date definition files; scanning automatically while you Surf the Net. Don't go Online without it!! It's cheep insurance on your hardware and software investment, not to mention your priceless (to you) and irreplaceable Data.

You also need a Firewall. I like the Hardware kind included in something like a LiknSys, Net Gear, etc. product. You can also get a Software Firewall. One is included in XP Service Pack 2.

As to downloading music, pictures, etc. be careful where you get it. There is a lot to learn about what is safe and what is not. If you have the protections I just told you about, they will alert you to bad things happening and help protect you.

Finally, you CAN download so much stuff that your Hard Drive fills up and your PC slows down, but that is A LOT OF STUFF! If you need all that, burn some of it to CD’s and delete it from the drive. You really can't use it all that much if you have enough music, etc. to slow down the average PC these days. If you have an older PC that you upgraded to XP, it has a smaller Hard Drive and this could be a problem.

One more thing, I'm talking about stuff that is offered for free. If you are downloading or other wise passing around Copyrighted stuff that someone is counting on for making a living, it's stealing! If it's OK by you for someone to break into your home and take stuff that you worked for and love, then it's OK for you to download Copyrighted material!

We can only control and be accountable for our own behavior. Any problems with "The System", etc. must be dealt with Lawfully. If this means Political Action, Law Suites, or what ever, most of us live in Democracies. If you think something is wrong, get your butt out and change it! Don't sit at home and whine.

No - these actors/actresses/singers make an exorbitant amount of money.

I realize that it takes a lot of courage and sacrifice to get to get big, but when they are making 10s of millions dollars, and I work my *** off , and will never even come close to making that in my lifetime, something is out of balance.

And their producers and managment make even more behind the scenes.

I laugh every time I see those ads where they show all the poeple working behind the scenes and say they need to get paid too.

I think that inflated compensation for celebs degrades quality most of the time. Once some of them get big they realize they can put out any crap and make millions.

I'm tired of paying for other people to get outrageously wealthy.
screw them.

Apparently annette h knows nothing about computers. Just browsing the internet puts things on your hard drive and makes it run slower (Temporary files, images, stored cookies, spyware, viruses, text documents, etc).

But to your question......

It depends WHAT you're downloading. If you're getting music without paying for it, it's bad. Would you want to put your HEART AND SOUL into something and ask to be paid for it, and someone rips it off for free? No? Didn't think so.

Same goes for Art, Movies, Videos, Music, Text Documents, and any other sort of media.

Now if it's *offered* for free? That's different. :)

Depends what you're downloading and where from.

The last thing you want to download is infact music or videos from P2P programs such as Limewire, Kazaa, or any other program such as these. Even .torrents are not good. Make sure you have alot of protection on your PC, like a firewall, spyware removal, ect ect. I have none to be honest, but I know what and where to download from.

Need a more specific question. Some "stuff" is ok to download while other "stuff" like copyrighted info (music) is stealing from people (not just people who have money, but poorer musicians).

No, I don`t think it is bad. Microsoft & otheer have have sucked out too much money outta our pockets. :|
These hollywood stars earn in millions, and they charge us for watching their sometimes horrible movies. We have a right to watch their stuff for free. ;)
