If its true bamboo and not cane you can. Just cut off a stalk with at least 3 or 4 joints to it. Cover it halfway up with water and it'll root.

While bamboo can take over an area quite quickly, it depends on the type of bamboo. There are basically two growth characteristics...clumping and running. The first type is a safe bet for propogating for putting in your yard. The other (running) sends out rhizomes just like crab grass, and soon covers more and more area until nothing else can compete.

So if you know for sure the type is clumping, take a cutting with 3-5 live joints (with leafy shoots), make a shallow trench, and lay the bamboo on its side with the shoots pointed skyward, and water a few times. Teh plant will do the rest.

Yes. Now, if you plan to plant bamboo in your yard, it won't be long before it overtakes all of the area killing all other vegetation as it spreads. Check it out. Once it begins to cover an area, it is VERY difficult to get rid of it.

Chow!!
