In Central America, there is a lizard called the basilisk lizard that actually runs across the top of water. Weighing nearly a fourth of a pound, these lizards escape their enemies or just get from one point to another by running with their back legs in the water and their body angled to the water

The lizard that runs on water is the Basilisk lizard otherwise known as the Jesus Christ Lizard. They are part of the Iguana Family. Basilisks actually have large hind feet with flaps of skin between each toe. The fact that they move quickly across the water, aided by their web-like feet, gives them the appearance of "walking on water". They can run up to 20 meters on the surface and the young ones are known to be capable of greater distances.

Basilisk Lizard --sometimes called the Jesus Christ Lizard

Actually, a basilisk was a legendary reptile, thought to be able to kill with a look. So both the lizard AND the serpent in Harry Potter are references to a much older myth.

Philippine Sailfin Lizard (Water Dragon)

Scientific Name: Hydrosaurus pustulatus

Length: adults average 24 - 30" to maximum of 36"

Body: slightly compressed
Tail: long; male has large sailfins on back and tail; female has dorsal fringe
Toes: scale fringes allow animal to run on to of the water on hind legs ( like pontoons); juveniles run on top of the water for short distances
Vestigal Third Eye: on top of head (parietal or pineal eye); clearly visible; sensitive to angle of sun's rays; thought to be homing mechanism

Personality: hand-raised individuals become very tame and seem to like being handled.
Defense: when threatened go into water to escape

reproduction/lifespan: egg layers

diet: omnivore • fish, frogs, fruits, vegetables & insects

habitat/range: rain forests; never far from water • Philippine Islands, Southern New Guinea and Northern Australia

There is a group of tropical American lizards that look like skinny versions of our Water Dragons, Physignathus lesueurii, which can run on the surface of water for short distances. They do this by being relatively lightweight for their size and by having long toes on the rear feet (they run on water only on their rear legs). But the main principle that keeps them on top of the water is momentum. Just as we can belly surf for a short distance by throwing ourselves across the water, so can a relatively light weight lizard dash across water before it starts to sink.
