Send a thank you note immediately. When you do that, your name pops up in their head again. Most places interview lots of people so you want to get your name in their mind as much as possible. Also, if you haven't heard anything after a week, I would call and check on the status. If they haven't already made a decision, this will let them know that you are really serious about the job. If they have already picked someone else, at least you won't be wondering about it.

At the end of an interview, if I am really, really interested in the position, I will usually let them know right before I leave the interview that I am highly interested.

I used to do some college recruiting and we would interview a dozen candidates in a row. All had outstanding experience and academic credentials and it's sometimes hard to differentiate between them. Having a candidate state that they are very interested and this wasn't just a practice interview for them, can help that candidate stand out.

Just do your best during the interview itself. The rest is out of your hands.

be persistant. There was a job I wanted years ago and I actually called them or went there every day. I got the job cause they told me that they knew I wasn't going to give up.

You have to wait for their final decision. Give them a week or so, then politely inquire as to what is happening.
