Beauty, as ugliness, is a conditioned reaction to physical attributes. In Western societies, "beauty" often means being tall, with wide-set eyes, a patrician nose, full lips, large breasts, small waist, slightly larger hips.

And that definition has constantly shifted over time. In the early 20th century, beautiful women had larger waists and thighs and very pale skin (tan skin was a mark of a lower class, forced to work in the sun).

In the late 1500s-early 1600s, the artist Peter Paul Rubens' paintings of plump, fleshy women were so coveted and popularized, the word rubenesque is derived from his last name.

In parts of Africa, women with stretched necks and lips are considered very beautiful, where here, they would be considered freakish.

One of the ways we personally can "beat" the beauty myth is to stop subscribing to it. No more celebrity mags, no more beauty contests, no more television shows that tell us what beautiful is. We would each have to shift concepts of beauty from the image makers (media) to ourselves. Imagine how much real beauty would be in the world then.

That is like asking who is better, the rich or the poor? God does not create anything ugly, WE DO!

I feel a little sorry for you for asking this question, though, it shows that you are shallow and can not identify the fact that being "pretty" on the outside is not nearly as important as having a beautiful soul. That the inner beauty is reflected out and not the other way around. I have met very beautiful men and women who are ugly, ugly inside. On the other hand I have met people who have been physically scarred and have such wonderful spirits, their appearance is that of beauty.

I fear that you have missed the train in what is being human. We need to take care of each other. And always remember those wise words... "Variety is the spice of Life." Also, "Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder." We all have different taste and look very different of each other that defines for us what is beautiful and what is ugly - intimately, in our eyes and soul!

Good Luck, God Speed.

I think that it is a matter of opinion. I think that everyone is beautiful and ugly in their own ways. Someone who looks beautiful according to our social standards can be the meanest and nastiest person you could ever meet! They are only beautiful on the outside and they are ugly on the inside. There are also people who may not look beautiful according to our social standards, but they could be the warmest, most kind person you will ever meet! They're beautiful on the inside even though they may not look like it! Also, I know a few people who aren't beautiful according to standards and they are also very ugly on the inside as well and it works the other way around too! I have a friend who is very beautiful and she has a wonderful spirit and she is a beautiful person on the inside!! It's all opinion and no matter what I say, you're still going to have yours. Just remember that everyone is different and everyone has wonderful traits and horrible faults.

Why are you blaming God? If fact why is it that when things go right for many people God is ignored; but as soon as something goes wrong, the scapegoat is brought out? People are not perfect, so problems are going to occur, this world is scarred by sin. I don't blame God for my Asthma, its just the result of the damage done by sin. So the next time you see a person with a disability physical or otherwise, or you drive by a cemetary, remember this is the price of sin.

We are all made in the image of God... so the bible says.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and that eye is usually influnced by culture. What the majority call "beautiful" in America may not be considered "beautiful" other places in the world.

Because there needs to be a balance in the world and an expansion of the idea of beauty...the phrase "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" has to have more than one ideal and physique to behold

As we grow and mature in life we realize that beauty comes in variety, I agree it is not always obvious at first sight but the crown of my quest is to know others with that beauty in heart. If you have it going on, on the surface and in the heart you that is a real plus.
