To get my liscense renewed I have to take my social security card, obviously. The thing is I had mine lamiated since it started to fall apart, and now they wont accept it. I was wondering how much a new one costs if anyone knows.

Oh, and before anyone says it, yes, I do realize it says on the back of the card not to laminate it.

It is one of the last few free things in this country. Yes my friend a replacement Social Security card is absolutely free. Just remember to take with you a valid form of ID. An expired license is not going to do it. A birth certificate wont do it either. You can either get a temporary license receipt from DMV or maybe a health insurance card or a current school ID.

And no, it cannot be done over the phone. You can do it by mail, but we advise against mailing original documentation. Go into your local office in person instead.

It shouldn't cost you anything, just look up the social security administration in your telephone book and go during their office hours and apply for a new one. It takes about two weeks to get your new one.

It is free, but it can be quite a hassle. I reccomend arriving at the office first thing in the morning when it opens so you don't end up at the end of a loooonnng wait list.
