Im going to agree with iggwad.

The only reall place youre going to be ripped off is taxis. Learn the public transport the day you get there - its very easy and affordable (185 ft per ticket).

I just got married there last month and apart from wedding costs and entertaining my HUGE family I think I spent around $400 over 16 days - but I was going out every night with friends and family. Id say bring about $300 - $400.

Also bring an ATM card with you for backup but you probably wont need it.

Also - DO NOT change your money at the airport. There are a lot of exchange places (especially on Vaci Utca) that charge verry little or no commision. Skip McDonnalds and Burger King - there are a lot of really good restaurants and the farther away from the danube you go the cheaper they get. Try the Cafe area near the Oktagon (its a tram stop - and well marked on most maps) - they are mostly outdoor and good for people watching - good prices too.

Budapest is 100% amazing and youll have the time of your life there.

The answers you got before give you a good idea, I agree too that about 500 Euros would be enough, but have some debit/credit cards as backup. You can have lunch or dinner at very fair prices, and you will realize after the first day that the best way to go is order half size meals as they are HUGE. It is not unusual there to ask for half meals. Also sightseeing don't cost much, the Budai Castle, citadel, Margaret island, Heroes square are free. If you want to go up the fisherman's bastion or visit the parliament building from inside there is a fee, but much cheaper than other places in Europe. You are gonna have the time of your life, in my opinio is the best city in Europe. If you have any questions, contact me.
Have fun

I lived in Budapest for 3 months but that was last year..Anyways I wouldn't go there with less than 1000 in my pocket considering that Hungary is part of EU and altough the currency is still forint not euros everything is getting more and more expensive.

Iggwad is right. Maybe even 200-250 Euro would probably do. But get a travel insurance in case anything should happen. And yes, learn some greeting words and such...

Awesome. Been there several times. (Wife is Hungarian.)
You will never spend $500 even if you went shopping.
It depend on your dining taste of course.
Best tip I can give you is to not take a taxi unless you have someone who speaks hungarian. They will rip you off royally. But ther are 4 different forms of public transportation so getting ANYWHERE is never a problem.

Your going to love it have a safe trip.
You can email through profile if you have more questions.
