I've been thinking about getting the top of my ear pierced when i get older but not right now. Has anyone gotten the top of their ear pierced and does it hurt?

Yea, but it's not too bad. The higher up your ear you go, the more it hurts. But it's not unbearable or anything. My sister pierced the top of her ear herself and she said it hurt a lot, but she could handle it. Just use a lot of ice. I suggest you get it professionally done though. Just bring a friend so you can grip on their hand lol.

The short answer to the question is yes, it does hurt. How badly it hurts, however, depends on several factors.

The first thing you need to know when getting a cartilidge piercing is to NOT have the piercing done with a piercing gun. This is how they do piercings at mass-market stores like Claire's, Afterthoughts, etc. While piercing guns are great for earlobe piercings, they should never be used for cartilidge piercings. The reason being that a piercing gun forces the solid earring through the cartlidge, shattering it in the process. Speaking from experience, THIS HURTS. Not only is it extremely painful, but because the cartlidge was shattered, it takes a very long time to heal properly, if it ever does.

When you get your piercing done, I would reccomend going to a piercing studio, rather than a mass-market accessory store, such as Claire's or Afterthoughts. These places, although more expensive, have more experience in dealing with these types of piercings. They will do your piercing with a gauged needle, which is hollow. Now, the needle looks scarier than it actually is. When you do a piercing with a guaged needle, the hollow portion actually *removes* a bit of cartlidge, rather than forcing its way through there. Then, the guage needle is removed, and your stud or ring put in. Presto! You're pierced. The healing process for this is *way* easier, and takes a lot less time. Furthermore, although it still hurts, it hurts a great deal *less* than getting it done with a piercing gun.

I'd say that the piercing I had done on the top of my ear with a piercing gun was probably a 7 or 8 on a pain scale of 1-10. But the one I had done properly (at a piercing studio, with a guaged needle) was *maybe* a 3 or 4.

Also, although you said you're waiting until you're older, you might want to consider this - the younger you are, the softer the cartilidge in the top of your ears is. This makes for a less painful piercing. I'd say as long as you're at least 12 or 13 (to make sure the cartilidge is at least fully *formed* - talk to your piercer), it's something you can go ahead and do.

Hope this was at least a little helpful!

I've got a cartiledge piercing and it wasn't too bad at all...it hurt for a moment when the earring was inserted, and a bit sore for a few days after, but that was it...not a whole lot more than having the lobes done...

...sometimes for vanity, we must tolerate pain...lol!

Mine is pierced and yes it hurt. The worst part was trying to sleep. Everytime I rolled over on it, I woke up in agony. It heals just as fast as a lobe piercing, though.

I have not got mine done but my daughter got hers done when she was about 10 or so. She had to let it grow up bc the stud grew into her ear and i had to practically dig it out. It was painful to her and disgusting to me. Since then I have learned that you should go to a piercer and use a hollow needle to have it done. My daughter is 16 now and wants hers done again and we will be going to the same piercer that did my nose and navel. Good luck.

Yep-per .... it's cartilage, so it hurts worse than just piercing skin & fatty tissue in the earlobe.
No pain, no gain .... right?

Yes, I had it done, no, it doesn't hurt. Just feels a little warm afterwards. Make sure you clean it well though, it will hurt if it gets infected!

Yes, because it's the cartilage. It takes several months to fully heal too!
