But it depends on a few things and you might get away with working on a tourist visa. That involves much less red tape. Who is your employer? US or local? How long do you intend to work in Africa? Which country? etc. These questions determine if you need a work visa or not. So there's no straightforward answer really...

Do not forget to check any consequences for insurance. If you work on a tourist visa, will a travel insurance suffice or not? Check it out, better safe than sorry etc
