Don't you see that anyone who would do something this horrendous IS mentally ill?? She will never be free and she will get the help she desperately needs! Why are people so unwilling to believe that mental illness needs treatment just like diabetes or cancer? There was no question this woman suffered from post-partum depression and was advised not to have more children before her last baby was born. Her husband is as much to blame in this sad, sad story and I'm sorry that he won't be prosecuted. The new verdict is true justice, but don't believe for a minute that Andrea Yates will not suffer horribly for the rest of her life, whether she's in jail, in an asylum or out on the streets. I'm sorry you can't understand that. A jail sentence will not bring the babies back.

I am a long time worker in a very large mental hospital. Again and again, I have seen how Yates' illness works. She genuinely is mentally ill. People can know that it is wrong to do x and also not even want to do x, but they are compelled to do x by the nature and effects of their mental illness.
The abuse of the insanity defense has led many states to revise their laws defining what constitutes "mental disease or defect" so as to make it more difficult for these abuses to carry the day in court. Like the guy awhile back who killed an official in San Francisco and said it was because he ate a twinkie. Duh.
But the downside is that some people who genuinely deserve such a defensive don't get it. Yates really was and is mentally ill.

I have gotten so cynical about our justice system it did not surprise me at all. Media attention and high profile lawyers can twist the truth to any demented form. The truth is murder is murder. Those children would still be alive if Andrea Yates was committed or locked up. If this story had not been big news and the legal resources were not there, and if Yates were a black woman, she would probably be on Death Row right now.
Does the concept of a fair trial still exist ?

Yes, because now you can bet that most murderers are going to try the insanity plea. My 17 year old nephew ( who was just going pro in motocross) was murdered last year along with his co-worker (22 year old with 2 week old baby), a highway worker and 2 police officers (who were answering a mental health call), all in one day, by a man who is bi-polar (and said they stole his headlight at the motorcycle stop they worked at) and they still have not declared him competent to stand trial! He's sitting in the state mental hospital making lists of other people he's going to kill if he gets out (his brother, his cousin who is my landlord and my husband). It makes me sick! The families are never going to get closure on losing their loved ones.

i do no longer consider the call!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! She killed her infants separately. Her oldest son walked in on her interior the bathing room whilst she became drowning his 6 month outdated sister, the boy ran in the time of the residing house and Andrea Yates chased him and dragged him back to the bathing room and then drowned him too (she knew what she became doing!!!). She would desire to circulate to reformatory the place she gets tortured daily! somebody would desire to stick her head underwater long sufficient for her to think of that she is going to drown and then do an identical element to her day after on the instant, and day after on the instant, and day after on the instant after that. She shouldn't of gotten off so honestly for killing her infants. A 6 month outdated, 2yr outdated, 3 300 and sixty 5 days outdated, 5 300 and sixty 5 days outdated, and a 7 300 and sixty 5 days outdated, how are you able to kill your individual flesh and blood!!?? they are literally asserting that that's ok so which you will kill your infants in case you plead insanity! I STRONGLY DISAGREE WITH the call.

filthy liberal feminists are so happy. this is REALLY what they mean by "pro choice" - you can kill your kids in the womb, or outside of it.
they make up fake mental disorders to get her off.
i hope they appeal and toss her back in

I can't believe that! I guess anyone can kill and claim they are not in their right mind "by reason of insanity" and not have to pay for their crimes. That's crazy!!
