Pines create a acidic soil because of their decomposing needles, so you will want something that likes both shade and that type of soil...rhodadendron or yews are a good choice if you are looking for something bigger/shrubby...depending on the amount of morning and evening sun the area gets, you could also try blueberries if that interests you, otherwise a groundcover perennial such as pachysandra might work, or an annual such as impatients.

G'day mate. I spent a lot of time tree marking in pine (P. radiata) plantations here in Aussie land. About the only things that thrive here in this monoculture are Blackberries, Bidgee Widgee's and Rabbits. In warmer climates I also encountered heavy undergrowth of Lantana. I wouldn't recommend any of the above. The statement about pines making the soil acidic is spot on, and by the way, a good thick layer of pine mulch works wonders on Rhododendrons.

Impatiens might work. They like shade and you can snip and poke them in the ground to start more. Plus the good thing is they aren't expensive.

Of course this depends on the zone your in. The zone is very important. But your pines make it sound like you might be in the south.
