I am making some thing for my friends wedding. I need a famous poem about friendship by a well known poet. Or at the least a good poet. Any ideas? I welcome all.

The glory of friendship is not the outstretched
hand, nor the kindly smile, nor the joy of
companionship; it is the spiritual inspiration
that comes to one when he discovers that someone
else believes in him and is willing to trust him
with his friendship.

- Ralph Waldo Emerson

A friend is one that knows you as you are, understands where you have been, accepts what you have become, and still, gently allows you to grow.

William Shakespeare (1564-1616) British poet and playwright.

Got this in an email. I doubt it is what you are looking for but you might get a kick out of it. Enjoy

here is a series of promises that actually speak of true friendship:

1. When you are sad -- I will help you get drunk and plot revenge against the sorry bastard who made you sad.

2. When you are blue -- I will try to dislodge whatever is choking you.

3. When you smile -- I will know you finally got laid.

4. When you are scared -- I will rag on you about it every chance I get.

5. When you are worried -- I will tell you horrible stories about how much worse it could be until you quit whining.

6. When you are confused -- I will use little words.

7. When you are sick -- Stay the hell away from me until you are well again. I don't want whatever you have.

8. When you fall -- I will point and laugh at your clumsy a s s.

9. This is my oath..... I pledge it to the end. "Why?" you may ask; "because you are my friend".

hi! well i dont know any about friendship, but if it is for a wedding, why not something about love??? i know some great poems about love! one is from robert burns, its called my luve is like a red red rose:

O my luve's like a red, red rose
That's newly sprung in June;
O mu luve's like the melodie
That's sweetly play'd in tune.
As fair art thou, my bonie lass,
So deep in luve am I;
And I will luve thee still, my dear,
Till a' the seas gang dry.

Till a' the seas gang dry, my dear,
And the rocks melt wi' the sun;
O I will luve thee still, my dear
While the sands o' life shall run.

And fare-thee-weel, my only Luve!
And fare-thee-weel awhile!
And I will come again, my luve,
Tho' 'twere ten thousand miles.

O my luve's like a red, red rose,
That's newly sprung in June;
O my luve's like the melodie
That's sweetly play'd in tune.

the next one is a celtic or scottish poem but i dont know who wrote it! its alos about love and u can also get it as a song! christy moore is an irish singer and he sang that song once (but he didnt write it)

Black is the colour of my true love's hair.
Her lips are like some roses fair.
She has the sweetest smile and the gentlest hands,
I love the ground whereon she stands.

I love my love and well she knows.
I love the ground whereon she goes.
I wish the day it soon would come,
When she and I could be as one.

I go to the Clyde and I mourn and weep.
For satisfied I ne'er can be.
I write her a letter, just a few short lines,
And suffer death a thousand times.

(traditional)

maybe u like them...anyways i think for a wedding its better to talk about love than just friendship...good luck and have fun ;-)

The sonnet Maggie LeMasters referred to is 116:

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments; love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove.
O, no, it is an ever-fixed mark
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wand'ring bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come;
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

-William Shakespeare

Well, songs are basically poems set to music, and the best one for this topic I can think of is an old one, but great: "You're My Best Friend," by Queen. I think Freddie Mercury wrote it himself.

One of Shakespeare's sonnets starts out "Let me not to the marriage of true minds admit impediments". That's a good one.
A librarian could help you look it up with just that line.

1. Gibran on Friendship...

And a youth said, "Speak to us of Friendship."
Your friend is your needs answered.
He is your field which you sow with love and reap with thanksgiving.
And he is your board and your fireside.
For you come to him with your hunger, and you seek him for peace.
When your friend speaks his mind you fear not the "nay" in your own mind, nor do you withhold the "ay."
And when he is silent your heart ceases not to listen to his heart;
For without words, in friendship, all thoughts, all desires, all expectations are born and shared, with joy that is unacclaimed.
When you part from your friend, you grieve not;
For that which you love most in him may be clearer in his absence, as the mountain to the climber is clearer from the plain.
And let there be no purpose in friendship save the deepening of the spirit.
For love that seeks aught but the disclosure of its own mystery is not love but a net cast forth: and only the unprofitable is caught.
And let your best be for your friend.
If he must know the ebb of your tide, let him know its flood also.
For what is your friend that you should seek him with hours to kill?
Seek him always with hours to live.
For it is his to fill your need, but not your emptiness.
And in the sweetness of friendship let there be laughter, and sharing of pleasures.
For in the dew of little things the heart finds its morning and is refreshed.

I Wish For You

I wish for you...
Comfort on difficult days,
Smiles when sadness intrudes,
Rainbows to follow the clouds,

Laughter to kiss your lips,
Sunsets to warm you heart,
Gentle hugs when spirits sag,

Friendship to brighten your being,
Beauty for your eyes to see,
Confidence for when you doubt,

Faith so you can believe,
Courage to know yourself,
Patience to accept the truth,
And love to complete your life.

i will miss u my friend

so baby hwz it
