As a fellow sufferer, if the black UK house ones get too close to me I actually pass out, the only advise I can give is not to listen to people who say, "find out all you can about them, understanding about your fear is a step to getting over it" don't do it, I now know everything about them and have just moved to Oz......I am booked in for hypnotherapy in a few weeks as a last desperate measure........I hope it helps even if it is knowing you are not alone

See if you can get a friend to find you a daddy long legs spider. They are perfectly harmless, and they even eat smaller things that you want eliminated anyway. They make OK pets. Just take a broom and clear away the cobwebs when they get dusty.
I'm serious about this, by the way. In many states, it really pays to be wary of spiders. There are many whose toxin is lethal or harmful... so, caution is warranted. But irrational fear is not cool because it's a fixation and thus robs one of peace. Sit and consider what, specifically, it is about spiders that frightens you... if successful, you will discover that it is not the spider, but some characteristic or other that is the culprit. Can't trust what they will do? They are sneaky? They are awful looking? Note these are characteristics that can be applied to people as well.
Try killing some (spiders that is) this should turn the tide for you.

Oh oh me too, seriously I am the same way, I am very fearful of spiders. Personally I don't like any insects at all. Go figure I was the little girl catching grasshoppers, and turning over rocks to find bugs. One day I just took a really good look at one and noticed how ugly and strange it looks and freaked out. Ever since then I was at war, hehe. I don't let it run my life though. You have to be brave sometimes when you feel yourself getting a little crazy with it. You can still be scared, If I concentrate right know on it, I will get the willies. So I don't, but when it is time to kill one I freak out, as a matter of fact depending on how it looks I might just let them spend the night while I leave my house. Now it will take me forever to kill one, I am so afraid but, I feel like this. I don't want that &astard running free in my house. So I will stand there talking to myself and cursing out the spider. I will even call friends to give me the courage to kill it. I don't need help, I just have to realize that it is a little pest that deserves to longer exists in my home. Oh, and another thing you might want to do is get some holding spray. I mean the extra holding spray, and spay the hell out of it.

Ah yes a fear we both share. I do not really think there is anything we can do about it. I check my shoes every time I put them on and have been seen climbing up onto the couch back just to escape a spider that was crawling across the floor. I have almost wrecked because one decided to drop in his web right in front of my face. And out in my shed...*shudders* I don't even want to think about the things lurking out there but I did find a very large Black Widow. I would say the only way to get over fear is to face fear but believe me I have tried this and it is just far too creepy.

I think any help you get will involve facing up to your fear. If looking for spiders is becoming obsessive behaviour you need to get professional help.
Personally I avoid hoovering up spiders as I think whatever they are finding to eat in my home could be a lot worse.

What you have is called a specific phobia - in this case to spiders. The only empirically validated treatmet for this is cognitive-behavioural therapy. Its very successful and can eliminate your fear in as few as 6-8 sessions.

you have good reason to fear them - most are poisonous.
and they're just icky too.
Garfeild the cat hates them too.
kill'em all,....
But don't just suck them up with your vaccume, they may still survive the encounter. Don't use messy poisons or sprays either.
Use ordinary hair spray, it will freeze them up and its easier to clean up after they pass away the next day.
I prefer using the Ultra Firm Hold, it dries fast and they can't crawl away somewhere to die. It blinds them and binds them. And it won't leave poison to make your pets or little children sick.

cognitive-behavioural therapy "really" helps you. how to cope with the phobias is their special subject.
they teach you how to control your reactions (your freaking out) and they train yourself to that undesirable stimulant step by step.
