Is it formal or casual? A shrimp ring is good. As the gentleman above suggested, a cheese/cracker plate with wine is also good. A veggie plate, or a favorite appetizer or side dish is good, also. And you can never go wrong with a dessert, especially something that is your specialty. If you are at a loss, then a bottle of wine by itself is always a very nice gesture.

I'd take an appetizer that could go with anything they are serving for dinner. My suggestion would be a nice spinich dip in a big bread bowl with sliced bagette.

Easy, yummy, and nice presentation!

A bottle of wine is old hat. Make a good side dish that you're good at and one that goes with any kind of entree. A fruit compote?
