This is actually several questions in one. Why do people still stereotype NASCAR fans as dumb rednecks? Particularly since it takes some serious *green* to afford good tickets, rent fan scanners, and tailgate? Also, why do people think all NASCAR fans are conservative?

Do you feel that you personally are a "traditional" NASCAR fan? Why or why not?

To a_team_rerun: I drink orange soda while I'm watching (in support of Tony Stewart's orange car), not beer. My beloved and my mom don't drink at all, ever, and they love NASCAR. You don't *have* to get drunk.

People are so ignorant and incredibly aggressive with their hatred of a sport...in this case, NASCAR. In my opinion, the sport is amazing and couldn't be better if they tried, but others may think otherwise. A lot of my friends and peers think it's very odd of me to like the sport. Most don't say rude things about it to my face...but others have. It's annoying that people feel comfortable doing it. I think people have this association with redneck-ism and think that nascar promotes that whole redneck "lifestyle" which is crazy. First of all, do you think those famous and rich drivers like Carl Edwards, Tony Stewart, or Jimmie Johnson are rednecks? Of course they aren't! Same goes for the fans. They are just normal people who love the sport...so there! NASCAR haters don't want to believe that nascar is a sport for EVERYBODY to get into...it has to be only "rednecks." Those haters are so stupid. Just ignore those stereotyping people.

I'm not a redneck. I don't fit any...I mean...ANY of the stereotypes. I won't even list them all. I am not a redneck but I do LOVE nascar!!!! And Tony Stewart!

I'm not sure why people still stereotype NASCAR fans. I guess it's because that is how most NASCAR fans were, but it has changed. There is a more diverse fan base now. The people who stereotype are just ignorant a$$holes who have nothing better to do than sit on the computer and put other people down for what they like. So I just ignore them and don't let it get to me.

I don't think that I am a traditional NASCAR fan. I don't fit any of the stereotypes. I'm not a redneck, I have a college education, I'm from and live in California, I'm a democrat, I own a two story house, etc, etc, etc,

I don't know if I could be classified as a redneck or not, through many of the stereotypes on here I'd say no! I am college educated, own a two story house, have all my teeth, live in the NE, am engaged to someone of no relation, have enough money to support my drivers and go to races as you said, I don't drink beer at all (any other alcohol rarely, if I do it's not during the race), I am a city girl (aside from the one or two weekends a year we go camping); so Nascar haters can kiss my ***!

Redneck or not I love my Nascar and will back all the guys, even the ones I dislike, for all the charities they support and all the strain they go through every race!

If these idiots would have a clue, if they outlaw Nascar because of gas...then I guess we won't have sports, because last time I checked those football players and basketball players, etc. travel from state to state using gas!

I don't understand the stereotypes either, but I'm learning to ignore stupid people. I am southern and a huge nascar fan, so I guess that makes me a redneck too. My husband and I go to races every year. I love going to Atlanta. You are absolutely right, it takes lots of green to go to races. My husband works for Noble drilling as an engineer. We both have college educations and have our own home and other toys. Neither of us drink, we have all our teeth, and we are the epitome of country. Redneck... well that depends on how long I've been outside. We southern folks really don't care if you call us a redneck. We know what we are and we are proud of it.

I would have to say that in a way I am a redneck girl and I say HELL YEAH and Hey yall but I am not southern nor am I stupid. I would have to say I am a good NASCAR fan simply because I love the sport of racing and support all the charities and I don't hate any driver though I am disgusted with many at this point.
Gordon has won my respect back though by his postrace comments

I think the biggest problem is the ongoing sterotypes of most motorsports: People see NASCAR fans as hillbilly rednecks, while F1 fans are seen as Euro-trash. It's just a big difference in style. F1 cars are made to be rediculously fast and agile, but they aren't meant for contact. NASCAR cars are quick in their own respect, however they are meant to withstand the bumps and scuffs that happen. I personally can't stand NASCAR; if I wanted to watch a bunch of Monte Carlo's drive around, I'd go to my local Chevy dealer. But I have nothing against people who like it. I just think the bashing from both sides should stop.

everyone I've ever known that was into nascar is a redneck... redneck doesn't mean you're poor, just country.
also, NASCAR is the dumbest and most wasteful sport imaginable... let's watch a bunch of cars go in circles until someone wrecks...all the while wasting gallons of fuel, and tons of rubber... woo hoo
oh and don't forget you have to get drunk while watching

Redneck and the stereotypes that come along with it are two different things.
I have been considered a redneck for quite a while. Am I stupid, well, I hope not. I know I ain't the brightest crayon in the box, but I also don't think I'm the dullest. Am I poor?? Well, I don't have a magic money tree.. I work for my money.
To each their own is my opinion. If you want to judge me by the sport I watch go for it.. Don't bother me none. You're the one who has to deal with the pain that comes with being ignorant.

I am a southern girl who loves NASCAR. So yeah I dont really care if people call me a redneck. It does not mean you are stupid or poor. In my opinion, rednecks know how to have fun, and I'd rather be stereotyped a redneck than anything else!

You can have money and still be a redneck.
And stereotypes do come from some grain of truth even if they have been blown out of proportion.
