It depends on your own personal tolerance level.
"If you are being abused or taking advantage of, you should keep a log of it, and make sure that there are witnesses to help you if you decide to sue for harassment and or mental distress.
...........and there are plenty of lawyers willing to take these cases to court,"
Uh, no there aren't. People like you perpetuate that myth. There is no law that says an employer or manager must be nice.
People are always amazed that unfair or even unethical treatment in the workplace is not necessarily illegal. It's fairly easy for an employer or manager to be a complete S.O.B. without breaking any laws.
As long as an employer is not violating any laws you are basically S.O.L.

The term "Extreme" is relative. What is extreme to one person may differ from another. For instance, harassment in any form, physical or otherwise (religious, sexual, racial, threats etc) would probably merit "extreme" conditions but then again this is subjected to its degree (I've come across people who'd take a whole lot of crap that I probably won't stick around for)
One things for certain, if you're not getting paid ... it's time to go!

If you are being abused or taking advantage of, you should keep a log of it, and make sure that there are witnesses to help you if you decide to sue for harassment and or mental distress.
If it is verbal abuse get a voice activated mini recorder and tape the abuse, name calling and so on, you shouldn't have to take that at work and there are plenty of lawyers willing to take these cases to court,
Make you you have documentation, witnesses and keep a log of the date, time, and what was said or done.
See if the company has a grievance resolution service that might help you out.

I would only advise it when you have another job lined up. To just resign without having another job would require something quite extreme... perhaps unsafe working conditions or sexual harrassment.

You are being harassed, you cannot work with your manager professionally, you just hate your job, etc. It could be several reasons. If you are thinking about it and have been thinking about it for awhile....I would contemplate it only if you think you could survive financially without the job.

If you don't feel happy, leave. I was stupid enough to stay even when my drunk boss (female) use to hit our hands (grownups) with a ruler.
