Positive : You are the big kahuna around the office.
Negative: When something goes wrong - guess who gets the flak?

The good thing about being an administrative assistant is that if you start in a lower paying job, you learn your skill and stay a while and you can change to a higher paying job doing the same thing.

The bad thing about being an administrative assistant is that you do all the processing of paperwork for the big guys. Even though it's the grunt work, you'll learn a lot.

If you look at monster.com you'll see that admin. assistants have a wide range of pay scales. Learn your skill and move to a bigger/better job. I've seen job postings for 40k a year, which is good for no college education.

Negative-you are often expected to do many things outside of your "job description", like change out the water cooler or make the coffee. People often expect you to know the answer to everything and how to do everyone else's job! You also have to know how to change your priorities on the fly if something else comes up.
Positive-if it's a larger company or dept then keeping busy makes you feel very helpful and keeps your day from getting boring. The office can't really make it without your position, so you do take on a lot of responsibility even if the job title doesn't sound that glamorous. People turn to you for help and consider you "neutral" a lot of the time during office politics issues.

I'm sort of an admin assistant. The pay is fantasitc but the job is boring as hell....!!

You can advance with your career quite well. I'm now in charge of the whole office with 40+ people.

Just as an added note - we're talking admin here people, not office junior! I don't have to deal with making coffee etc. and I'm treated very well by my employers. I think some of you are getting a bit confused!!

positive, you always have plenty to do. If you like paperwork and dealing with people, there is plenty of that to do. It's a great place to start within a company.
Negative, depending on the company and who you work for, sometimes they don't treat Admins with a lot of respect. If you are career minded and work hard, you can move up pretty quickly within a company. You develop good relationships with the people you work with, and if you work with customers as well, and do a good job, they will love you.

nothing positive- you get bossed around all day by "people more important than you" and have 5 things to do at the same time all day, while getting paid the same a restaurant hostess does- oh and you get dirty looks if, God forbid the coffee runs out. good luck, though. I guess the only pos. is you get your foot in the door.
