You'd be able to find a "glitzy" laptop on EBaY for the price range you are in there are many potential computers you can get with different configerations, but if the bare basics start at like 50$ on ebay imagine what you can get with 600$!!

For 500-600 dollars? Hmmm...You could probably get an old Dell Inspiron. The inspiron B130 is 450 dollars. GO FOR IT!

You said you want memory for plenty of files, you actually want a large hard drive. But storage is cheap, you call always buy an external hard drive to add on when you need it.
It is important to get your terminology straight. Go for lots of memory, I would thinkn 512 would be minimum. a gig recommended.

They could get an external drive cheaply enough to hold all their files, so get the one in your range that they "get to choose", with an external drive.

http://outlet.dell.com has some great deals (but this time of year, their main site also tends to have good deals). Don't buy one used (they tend to be rip-offs).
If you buy anything from tigerdirect, you'll be getting spam until you change your email address.
