While I have no true sources stating that the current Democratic Party is in no way affiliated with the Klan, it is important to note that the Democratic Party of the 1800's (which is when race relations were in a tailspin after Emancipation) is likened more to the conservative movement of today. Modern day Democrats are more in line with the Populist Party of that time period as well.

The Ku Klux Klan was started by disaffected southerners after the Civil War, one of the main instigators was Nathan Bedford Forrest, a Confederate cavalry officer. To say that the Klan was started by either political party or is even remotely related to one party or the other is a big stretch, as the Klan is far outside the mainstream of American politics.
I am a devoted conservative, and I can't even blame the KKK on the Democrats, though I'm sure that many of them would be quick to say that the Klan and the GOP are still tight or that George Bush is the imperial wizard of the KKK.
The Klan got its start right after the Civil War, and was meant to terrorize blacks and other minorities from exercising their politcal rights, and was not a product of either party, though it probably had sympathizers in both parties at the time.

Let me put it this way...
The Klan hates outsiders and people who are different.
The Republicans want people to conform to the norm (Whatever that is)
The Democrats celebrates difference, and abides by the maxim... different strokes for different folks.
So I doubt it very much if the Democrats would accept any Klansmen at all.
A Klansman would be More of a Republican than a Democrat
So it is NOT true to say that the democratic party is the party of the Klan

It's true that the Klan, formed shortly after the end of the Civil War, was formed primarily by Democrats. It's also true that the only former Klan recruiter in Congress is a Democrat, in the person of Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WV). However, in their defense, the Democrats have no known affiliation with the Klan, other than Sen. Byrd, who has on several occasions said that his involvement with them decades ago was a huge mistake.
It would be unfair to tar the entire party with the Klan brush based on this, but it's also unfair, not to mention irresponsible, for left-wing groups such as the NAACP and answerers like Jim W. to attempt to paint Republicans with that same brush. They are extremists, and ought to be treated as such.

No it's not true. The modern klan operates as its own political party. In the past, the Klan did support the democratic party but that was at least 50 years ago.

historically speaking, Democrats were usually on the wrong side of civil rights.
but the whole thing about them being the party of the Klan, that's a stretch. I wouldn't say it now because the DNC has a new approach toward racial relations. and yes, you're opening up for all the Democrats to spout about us racist neonazi republicans.

WRONGO!
And shame on you for your such desperate Republican trick at a time when red states are turning blue.
The racist Dixiecrat democrats of yesteryear are the White Southern Republicans of today. And many of them are STILL White supremacist.Wonder why your types dont mention that.Hmmm.
In the 1920s,time was when the REPUBLICAN PARTY AND THE KKK WERE ONE IN THE SAME.
Oops! Another fact embarrassing to ultraconservatives.
