Clemens is the best of these 4 pitchers. He absolutely dominates these guys in terms of wins, Ks and Cy Young Awards.
Clemens is the best.

I have to say Clemons is the best. Maddox is a really good pitcher, but he depends much on the flexibility of the umpires calling balls and strikes. A few years ago when the umps were basically called to the carpet, Maddox's ERA began increasing. Johnson is a really good power pitcher, but he depends a lot on his heighth and where he is when he releases the ball. Many of his strikeouts are swinging strikes out of the strike zone. Schilling and Clemons bring it right through the strike zone and the batter usually can do little with it if anything. Because Clemons has done it his entire career, I would say he is the best of those 4 and one of the best in the history of baseball. Schilling has seemed to get better with age. He wasn't always as dominant as he is now. Its like his career didn't really start up well until he went to Arizona. That is the long version of the answer to your question and it is only my opinion.

All of these pitchers are great, better than a lot of the rest of pitchers in baseball, but the best depends if you are talking about currently, or career. If you are talking about currently, it's Schilling hands down. While if you are talking about lifetime, it would have to be Clemens.

No one has come close to his success in the last 15-20 years: Striking out 20 twice, 7 Cy Young awards, 300 wins, 4000+ strikeouts. You can't really top that. All he has to get to make him in the top five pitchers ever is to get a perfect game. A no hitter would put him in the top 10.

The reason Schilling is doing so well is he is 5 or 6 years younger than Clemens, Johnson, and Maddux. He is also has a very strong lineup to back him up. His stuff isn't what it used to be, but he's still dominant.

All time, or now?

Now:
1) Schilling
2) Clemens
3 / 4) Johnson / Maddux (can go either way. Same ERA, ignore record b/c Johnson is on a much better team. )

All time:
1) Clemens.
2) Maddux
3) Johnson
4) Schilling.

Clemens, both now and career-wise.

None of those guys can even come close to touching Clemens' 7 Cy Young Awards, his 343 wins, and his sustained greatness.

Even now, he's keeping his ERA under 2.50, something none of those others can do. Schilling also deserves credit, too, for putting up awesome numbers this season.
