The British Criminal Justice system, per se, is not at all bad. It is full of checks and balances to ensure that everone gets a fair trial. The Manual used by Magistrates in the UK is of 3 volumes of over 1000 pages each. (Stones Justices Manual). There are other manuals such as Blackstones and Archbold of voluminous size.
It is sentencing that tends to aggravate the layman. Sentencing policy is not decided by Judges and the Legal Profession, but by the Home Secretary.
Were we to adopt a more summary form of justice, then the possibilities of both tainted acquittals and tainted convictions would be vastly increased. The British (really English, as the system in Scotland and Northern Ireland is different), needs to be tweaked, not radically changed.

It can't be any worse than in the US where murderers, rapists and child molesters frequently get off with a slap on the hand or a plea bargain. There are so many of these people in our country that the prisons can't hold them and the judges have to protect themselves and their families from harm. I read somewhere that Myra Hindley ( of the Moors murder) was going to be released but I see that she has died. And her companion Ian Brady is on a hunger strike? Give me a break. Some people need to be put away for life, but the law being what it is that often fails to happen. It amazes me that even as the victims "civil" rights are violated horribly, the hue and cry is all to protect the perpetrator. I hope to God the parents you mentioned will not be united with their children unless and until they prove that they are capable of truly caring for them.

Well, I am not into law, but it has affected me when my partner had 2 teeth smashed out by a violent man. He got 1 year ban from licensed premises as a punishment. To be honest I dont agree with our justice system. how is 1 year ban justice to two front teeth?
The guy also pleaded that he was bullied in school, how does that make up for what he did? he was the Bully that night.
we have a bad justice system!

British justice is now so bad it is becoming a joke. Some of the judges who give these absurd sentences are probably drunk, or latent child cruelty perpetrators them selves and have fellow feelings.
But most judges pride themselves of being liberal and "enlightened". Minor offenders like child abusers and torturer are shown "understanding" and sent for community service and rehabilitation. But the really bad criminals, guilty of the slightest racial insult, or sex discrimination, real all imaginary, are always given exemplary punishments and huge fines.
Until judges are elected by the people and stand for re-election, as they are in America, things will not improve.
But let us carry on deluding our selves that we have the finest legal system in the world. It is so flattering !

It is absolutely disgraceful. Why should they be given reduced sentences just because they admit?
The other day i watched 2 consecutive news articles, a man killed 2 kids while drunk driving and was let off, then someone defrauded a company and got 15 years.
It is a sad day when money is more important than life.

Read the article: Yes this is Horrible but then right here in usa very similar sentences are given even less for worse crimes.
Wish we could do something to help these innocent children!!

Is terrible, isn't it. I'm hoping to get a law degree and do whatever i can to change the way this country is run- judges and politicians are too concerned with ridiculous things, like banning fox hunting and smoking in public places, they won't deal with the issues that really matter.
And Foghorn, I'm studying Law too- it doesn't mean I have to agree with it.

Look, the Children were taken to care.
The parents need to sent to a Mental hospital for observation, not a prison. So I think the British system isn't so bad.
