I used to work in a restaurant and seen some stuff that has happened. Food that a customer hasn't touched was passed off a fresh to the next. It was not trashed because it was seen as not profitable and wasteful, plus the thought of hunger around the world.

This is against the law in most states, including (I bet) the one you worked in. Why? There's no guarantee that the customer has not sneezed on the food - or worse.

If you really want to "recycle" food, about the only legal way is to compost it. I live in San Francisco, where compost recycling is picked up at the curb just like paper and bottle/can recycling.

Yes, hunger around the world - and probably even in our local communities - is a problem. So volunteer with or donate money to food organizations. Unfortunately, "recycling" someone's french fries is not going to feed impoverished nations. I think this was an excuse for the restaurant to be cheap, unsanitary, and against the law.

I worked at a restaurant and we would sit buns out at every table....if they weren't used we would reset them...I think it is kinda gross but if it wasn't for germs and bacteria that we have been eating all of our lives our immune systems would be so weak would die of the slightest cold so in all actuality it's not that bad. Restaurants still need to follow health code though because even though some things are not a big deal it could get out of control really fast if they start breaking the rules.

That's a violation of federal food safety standards. If caught that business could be fined and/or lose their licensing to operate.
