I got my new laptop. When I installed firefox, the browsing and most features work fine, but when I go to some sites, there are plugins that need to be downloaded, and Firefox can't identify them. I finally found what I needed (the ActiveX control for embedded media files) but there are several other problems with special websites.

For example, I cannot use SRTest.com (a site that downloads a program and tests your system to see if it is able to play certain games). It acts like it will work, but then it just keeps on loading and never does.

Anybody know what to do? I'd hate to have to run two browsers at all times, because I hate IE due to it's lack of protection and popup blocking.

As people have already said, Firefox doesn't handle ActiveX. In fact no other browser used it except IE because ActiveX is a nonsense technology Microsoft invented because they didn't like Java (because they don't like anything they didn't make themselves and try to forced people into using their own alternative like WMA instead of MP3).

Anyway, there is an ActiveX plugin available for Firefox but I STRONGLY advise against using it. The basic reason IE's such a security nightmare is ActiveX, it's the reason you end up with shitloads of spyware and other nasties on your machine from surfing the net because all the expoits people use to foist this stuff on you are securtity holes in ActiveX.

The only other solution is either the extension someone else mentioned that opnes IE as another tab within FF, or the handy IEView extension:

http://ieview.mozdev.org/

With that installed, if you surf to a troublesome page, you can just right-click anywhere on the page and select to open that page into IE with the minimum of screwing around. You can also set specific sites to always launch into IE so if you click a link to a site that you know uses ActiveX it'll automatically launch into IE. You need to specify the pages that always open in IE mind you so I don't know how useful that feature really is, I never use it myself, although I do use the right-click option of IEView a lot.

There are some plugins that are available for firefox such as shockwave, flash, and many media players. However, you cannot use ActiveX controls in firefox. ActiveX is inherently insecure as it allows a wesbite to control your computer and you can never be sure that it's doing it in a way that is safe.

There is an extension for firefox though, called IE Tab. If you install it, and a site isn't working properly, there's a button you can add to your toolbar to have it start using IE to render the page. It's just as insecure as using IE itself, but you can select to view only those pages that you trust in the IE renderer.

There are just somethings that the fox can't handle. You've got to have IE for the Windows Updates anyhow, so just use it when the Fox doesn't work. There are a buttload of plug-ins for firefox, but it takes some time to find what you're looking for, if it's there at all.
