instead of giving money to charity, i flew to Africa, and I am a volunteer working with deaf people in the Gambia, West Africa. However, you asked, how have i helped this week?

This week...
On an official level, for the disadvantaged...
I worked training the deaf teachers working at the nursery school, in teaching methodologies for pre-school aged deaf children. most people here have no hope for their deaf children and do not even bother to send them to school. It is estimated that up to 85% of deaf people here have not received formal education in their lives.

I helped a family by sharing food with them, from my kitchen, they needed some snacks, as the wife is pregnant.

On a personal level...
Poor and poverty has different meanings... so the people i work with are not poor, just normal people leading their lives. People in developed countries would view these people as poor, but materially poor. what about povery of the spirit? Anyway, i digress.

I gave material to the tailor. Rather than giving money for nothing, I gave him work to do and he can accept the money for a few hours work. This particular tailor is like many other people here.
He is the only breadwinner in his extended family, so he has a very big burden of responsibility on his shoulders. He has to support his father, his father's two wives, their children, and his wife, who was chosen for him
So the work I gave him went some way to ease their lives. His family are subsistence farmers, but if you met them you would see they are happy. Not starving.

I can't change the world, it is humanly impossible, and I'm not a do-gooder either. I just want to do what I can, and enjoy myself living with people from a different culture. It's fascinating!

I'm a Veterinarian and charge the poor little or nothing, I know, "if they're so poor what are they doing with pets?, I don't care, I just help out when I can.

Madsky, read the book, hilarious, LOL. Everyone on here should give it a read.

I couldn't do it if I wanted to...although I've tried it in the past.

There's no such thing as "poor" and "disadvantaged."

It exists only in ones mind. Only the individual can fix that.

Yes, not to toot my own horn, but I help needy people quite often. But why waste my time talking about it on Yahoo? Last time I talked about my personal life I was accused of being a liar.
But you do have a point, most of the people on Yahoo care more about slamming the "other side" than they do actually making a difference.

Aside from already being burdened by taxes for services which help these people I also see them everyday during the course of my employment (Mista you got a quarter?). Most days I offer at least one of these individuals my services to help them find employment, that's been going on two years and nobody's taken me up on it yet.

Between state and federal taxes I paid almost 40% of my income to the Government and Government services. How much did you pay?
