Any good suggestions for brand too? I'm a beginner at the bass and want to try with and without picks.

there are fairly thick felt picks for the bass. you can use a guitar pick, people use all types of things. the guitar player for zz top uses a quarter. whichever makes the sound you're looking for is whats best for you.

I am a guitar player, not a bass player, but I am pretty sure that any thicker standard pick would work just fine on a bass. A thin pick on those thick bass strings probably wont get you too far.

You could always practice playing pickless on the bass as well.

You can buy different thicknesses. You would want a thicker pick, since the strings tear them up. Just pick out some thick ones that you like, they're all the same really. But it's cooler to play bass without.

A pick is a pick is a pick. There are different thicknesses though - you would most likey use a thicker one for a bass, but that's all personal preference.

I like the Jim Dunlop picks best

You might also want to use flatwound strings at the beginning - they're easier on your fingers.

Yeah, it's a 2mm pick (thick little bastard). Personally, I think Dunlop's make good picks. You might want to alternate between picks and finger-picking on your bass just to get a good feel for both. Sometimes, I find that finger-picking are good when you want a slow, ambient bass sound, while picking is better for the faster, harder stuff.

Personally, I prefer to play with my fingers, but I know a lot of other players who will just juse heavier guitar picks. There are a few manufacturers who make picks designed for bass, such as felt picks, whick will give you the softer attack of finger picking. Check someplace like musiciansfriend.com for some of them.
