I have bartended at several upscale catering and banquet facilities for years. Why is it that at a Irish or Italian wedding people tip generously but at ANY Jewish event the guests do not tip nearly at all?

At a typical non-Jewish wedding I can make on average of $150 in tips but at a Jewish wedding or 'Mitzvah I will get less than $10. No lie...$10 for a full shift.

Like most in the food service industry bartenders work for tips.

They (Jews) will come up to the bar and pull out a fold of money until their drink is poured ("we call this threatening to tip") and then put it away when we hand them the drinks without even peeling off a single dollar for the bartender!!! They do this so the bartender will make a stronger drink for them thinking that they are going to get a tip out of it.

So tell me...Why won't the Jews tip?

This is not an anti-semetic post. It's a real question for a real and ongoing situation.

Maybe they don't tip at banquets or catered events, and it should be put into the bill. But I have found jews, in general, always tip. And in fact would be insulted not to. This is my experience from over 20 years serving the public.
The problem has to be with the management. Who knows what they are saying to get the job. And the problem is with you; your preconception comes across in probably many ways.

I was wondering the same thing. A stereotype isn't always something ridiculous and farfetched but something that is observed and generalized. I have been a bartender at many events where you can expect a tip whether the gratuity is built in or not and for some reason Jewish events always tipped the least by far. I'm not talking about at a restaurant for dinner, I'm talking about weddings, bar mitzvahs etc. I always have in my head that if drinks are free then I have to tip. But they will drink very heavily and no tip. It's hard for me to think that it's religious so if someone could answer without yelling "stereotype!" and really think about it would be great. The first time I worked a Jewish event a fellow bartender said "we won't make any tips, they're Jews" I refuted the response but was surprisingly corrected by the actions of the patrons. I was shocked. I'm black and have heard stereotypes about black people not tipping and I make sure I tip so I can change the perception.

2 things i am a bartender as well jewish
i do know what your talking about but most people even non jews think that since they have paid for the event food and service that the servers and bartenders are already paid ( no need to tip ) i work in banquets and i just hope that you all are getting a part of the tip that is included in their total bill where i work its a union hotel and we (servers and bartenders) get 50 % of the gratuity so we make our minimum wage and get to split amongst us the grat . you also didnt say if these were hosted or no host bars what city are you in and if you are not getting part of the gratuity which where were at is 18% of food and beverage bill can be quite large you need to find a better place to work

Your question may be very real, but you and I both know it incites antisemitic bull ****. The Jewish people I know have NO problems putting up mega bucks up front, they just want to know the score. I strongly suggest that your event site build into the charges tips for all workers..charged up front, then dispursed with your pay check. NO ONE objects to that. At events, where the bar and food are paid for, it is NOT uncommon for no tips. I much prefer the tip built in, and are you so sure that the tips ARE NOT CHARGED??? Perhaps the management is keeping all the tips without your knowing it. I have been in the event business for a very long time...Caterers build in tips, bar service builds in tips...

Begorrah, lad, ye nae be thinkin' of the Scots, next?

But, seriously, I've got many friends of mine who are Jews and Scots, and they've been very generous. Maybe not to a Bartender who showed his bias towards them, which they can easily feel; and reply by giving him an insultingly low tip; but to someone who's in true need, I've seen both Jews and Scotsmen being very generous.

Perhaps you should think back and, David, do try to remember the fact that when you point a finger at someone, there are three fingers pointing back at yourself?

Cheers.

they dont believe in it.

Remember Resovoir Dogs where Steve Buscemi was speaking on the BS of the world. he pointed out that society says tip these guys over here but dont tip these guys over here. (Bistro vs Mc Donalds). He said he would not play ball.

He says give me a petition that says they should make more he will sign it

But what he wont do is play ball. Then he played the worlds smallest violin for the waiter as waitress.

He said they should get better jobs or

Learn to ****** type.

Dont know why Jews dont tip, it just reminded me of the movie

Jews have been persecuted for thousands of years...everything that has ever held value to them in any way has been taken away from them. They are a smart people and are easy at making money, but in the past it has always been taken away from them. Many of them lost all their savings and their homes in WWII to the Germans, and spent the rest of their lives in poverty. It is something that is probably still ingrained in them from the older generations to save as much as they can. I'm sorry that you don't get tips from them, but they aren't a mean people who want to spite you or anything...you have to look at it from a point of view other than your own. And for the rest of the people who answered this question, pull your ignorant head out of your asses and have a little compassion....

Have you tried putting out a cup with some $ bills already in it? Some pople don't really know whether gratuity has been taken care of by the host or whether they should tip. This is especially confusing with an open bar situation.

I don't know...but then again I'm not in the habit of asking folks for passports, baptismal records, or Bar Mitzvah certificates when I'm serving the public.
